Superweek finishes Chicago weekend with another speedy crit

The course in Bensenville is rather multi-personality, with a sweeping first turn leading into a long back stretch into the wind, before snaking around a three-block-long stretch with four 90 degree turns in each and then a tailwind drag to the finish line. Almost every race on the day saw a breakaway form and stick to the end, and in the men's race, it was a group of seven that almost took a lap. Out of this group the fast midwest rider Josh Carter (Athletes By Design) which used his knowledge of the course to his advantage, sprinting out of the final turn on third wheel to take the win.

"It was a fast race, but smooth the whole way," he said. "I had been going for the primes and case the first two days, so today I decided to sit back and see what happens."

What happened was he took out a bigger pay-day. Back in the field the series leader Jonathan Cantwell (Kahala-Lagrange) and points leader Andy Crater (Wheel & Sprocket) held onto their respective leads. "As soon as you get into a leader's jersey the roles change," said Cantwell about defending his lead. "It doesn't matter if it is Superweek or the Tour de France, the yellow jersey is the most important."

But it was not an easy task today, as Cantwell's computer showed an average speed of nearly 45 kph for the 100km race.

Tomorrow the racing changes with a move north into Wisconsin and the Alpine Valley road race, a hilly and tough course. The next three days will feature road courses before the diet of criteriums pick up for the weekend.

Benjamin continues title defence

Kelly Benjamin (Cheerwine) made it two wins and too easy today, extending her early lead in the overall for Superweek by outsprinting Aussie national track champion Skye-Lee Armstrong (FRF Sports) and Sarah Caravella (Aaron's Pro Cycling). Adding to Benjamin's win was teammate Sarah Uhl who took over the red points jersey after winning all the intermediate sprints on offer.

I thought the one break was going to work," said Benjamin, referring to the breakaway she was in early in the race. "The girl I was with was so strong. But Aaron's chased it hard, giving it everything."

That chasing was done wholly by Catherine Powers (Aaron's Pro Cycling), who was buried by the time the break was caught. "Every lap I would only bring it back a little," said Powers. "When we finally did catch them I was off the back for a little because the speed stayed up!"

After grabbing the points jersey, Sarah Uhl and Cheerwine went back to working for Benjamin in the field sprint. Trying to upset the party was Armstrong, all the way from down under. "It was a little dissapointing for me," she said. "I'm not a power sprinter, I'm a track racer and like to sprint from a fast speed, but the Cheerwine girls went slow through the final turn."

The powerful Benjamin held off the rest of the field all the way to the line.
