Lademann holds off Munoz, McCormack and Friedman to win the Doylestown criterium

Former national team pursuit champion, Christian Lademann (Sparkasse-Etta Maes Antiques), joined an early break with a group of so-called "big fellas" that included "The Businessman" Mark McCormack (Colavita-Sutter Home), Fausto Munoz (Tecos), and 2005 Doylestown Crit winner, Mike Friedman (TIAA-CREF). The break, which occurred roughly six laps into the 55-lap race, faltered at first as the group sorted out strategies on how to stay in front.
"We didn't really work together in the beginning," said Lademann, "we dropped somebody off who wasn't really involved in the sprints but it's better to have a bigger breakaway in the beginning because the teams back in the peloton are happy to have somebody ahead."
Lademann sustained a pace that forced the others to ride their own race rather than relying on support from their respective teams.
"Friedman and McCormack really want to go into the peloton where they would have support for the sprints and I was like 'Please don't!' because then I would have never made it."
Lademann, who withdrew after 60 miles in yesterday's race, felt confident and energized coming into today's crit.
"It was a hard day yesterday, you saw everybody really tired and you had to do yesterday's race to enter today's race. I kept some energy from yesterday, I really pushed it to win today and I did."
Floyd Landis, who grew up in nearby Lancaster County, was in the neighborhood and dropped by for a visit. Landis, who has never won a crit, detailed some of the tricky bits to racing a criterium.
"It's different than a road race because there's always those small circuits so there are a lot of turns and a lot of hard sprints out of those turns," said Landis. "So each time you take a corner you have to sprint and after two hours, it kind of wears on you. Ordinarily there's a sprint at the end with the whole field but occasionally a breakaway like this one will stay away until the end and it's a small group of people or one person who will win. Generally the speed stays high in the pack when there's a small breakaway because otherwise the breakaway gets a chance to lap the field and once they've lapped it, it's almost impossible to get rid of them again so they're guaranteed to win."
For the second day Mexican racer, Fausto Munoz, managed to get caught up in a crash but then managed to advance strong and fast enough to put him in second place two days in a row. A somewhat self-effacing Munoz acknowledged the pedigree of his competitors but took credit for his own prowess as well.
"I know that there are sprinters better than me," said Munoz. "I used to do tours, I climb well and sprint but not good enough like these guys. I'm glad to be on the podium and maybe race here again."
