Carlström wins and closes on GC

Former Finnish national road champion, Kjell Carlström laid down the gauntlet to Englishman Kristian House for general classification honours after winning one of the tougher stages of the tour, the Deloraine to Sheffield race which includes the infamous "Heartbreak Hill."
Carlström was an impressive winner after biding his time in the early part of the race before putting the hammer down into Sheffield. The 30 year-old won Finland's road race title in 2004, but in an even bigger individual performance ran second in Stage 9 of this year's Tour de France. A former sprint champion of both the Herald Sun Tour and Tour of Queensland, Carlström narrowed his deficit to House in this event to just 12 seconds from the overnight margin of 35 seconds, although he was to give two seconds back in the afternoon stage.
This stage was always going to have an affect on the peloton and it came as no surprise to see more than 11.30 minutes separate Carlström and the last rider across the line. Carlström said it was satisfying to get a win after being close for most of the week. "I've been knocking on the door without being able to get a win, so it’s nice to break through," he said.
Tasmanian Wesley Sulzberger was not overly disappointed with his second placing as he was more concerned with the events of the Tattersall's Cup than the tour itself. "I don't know if I'm too far back to win the tour, but the complete series has been by real aim this week," Sulzberger said.

His second to Carlström took his lead over Canberra's Robert McLachlan out to 34-points and the Tassie rider is looking solid in the saddle. Sulzberger was to concede one point back to McLachlan in the day's afternoon stage.
Claiming third in the tough "Heartbreak" stage was Victorian youngster William Ford, his first podium placing in this tour and series. But the biggest casualty was McLachlan, who missed an important break when the riders left Mole Creek to start the Category 1 climb. McLachlan rode extra hard over the closing 25 km, but could not reel in the race leaders, eventually finishing 54 seconds away in 15th place.
