Jayco Tour of Tasmania - NEAustralia, October 24-29, 2006Main Page Results Overall standings Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 3 - October 25: Westbury, 39 kmHerzig makes stage his ownEnglish invader Kristian House in yellowBy Rod Morris in Westbury English invader Kristian House moved back into his favourite colour, with a comfortable day in the saddle in the Jayco Tour of Tasmania while Queensland's Peter Herzig won the morning stage to move into outright second. How it unfoldedQueensland sprinter Tattersall's Cup veteran Peter Herzig made the third stage his own and jumping back into serious general classification honours. After losing two minutes on the opening day, particularly from a lacklustre stage 1, the 28 year-old Herzig dominated the Westbury Criterium, although that wasn't his original intention. "I was a bit dirty on losing two minutes on the first day and thought I might be able to get some time back by winning a few of the intermediate sprints," Herzig said. "I was surprised a little bit; they let me go on my own and get so far up the road." Herzig jumped from 10th to second in general classification, courtesy of his outstanding effort, which also saw him lap most of the main field, including overnight tour leader Tim Walker and recent Melbourne to Warrnambool winner, Robert McLachlan. "I could hear the commentators telling me the time gaps and the enthusiasm from the school kids near the finish line definitely spurred me on over the last few laps," he said. At one stage, Herzig had opened up a time gap of almost 30 seconds on a five rider chasing group, which included Tasmanian Wesley Sulzberger and English international Kristian House, who was trying to reclaim the leader's yellow jersey from Walker. The time gaps were crucial. Important to Herzig to move up on GC and important for the House vs. Walker duel. In the end, Herzig had 17 seconds to spare from Sulzberger, Scott Peoples and promising young Victorian Daniel Braunsteins, while House was content with fifth place, 20 seconds behind the stage winner. Herzig won a stage of last year's Tour of Gippsland in the Tattersall's Cup and in the Tasmanian leg, finished third behind Chris Jongewaard in the Sheffield Kermesse stage, the route of which will be repeated on Friday afternoon. Unfortunately for Herzig, his gallant fight back up the GC leader board in Stage 3 was going to be all bought undone in a dramatic stage 4 in the afternoon. House moved back into yellow when he picked up 1.30 minutes on Walker, who was with the main bunch and officially credited with 24th place PhotographyFor a thumbnail gallery of these images, click here Images by Shane Goss/www.licoricegallery.com
