Jayco Tour of Tasmania - NEAustralia, October 24-29, 2006Main Page Results Overall standings Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 10 - October 28: George Town - Scottsdale, 91.9 kmStage set for nail-biting finaleBy Rod Morris in Scottsdale Bad tactics in the penultimate stage may prove costly for Finland's Kjell Carlstrom in the $40,000 Jayco Tour of Tasmania, which will reach its climax in Launceston on Sunday. Carlstrom lost 15 seconds to tour leader Kristian House (England) in Saturday morning's George Town Criterium stage to lag 27 seconds behind and with no change to that in the afternoon climb to Scottsdale, must re-think his strategy for the 34 km Launceston Criterium final stage. Tattersall's Cup leader Wesley Sulzberger and his nearest challenger, Robert McLachlan (ACT) were the big winners yesterday, featuring in a dual quinella. After finishing second to McLachlan in the morning, Sulzberger reversed the placings at Scottsdale. He will carry a 33-point lead in the Tattersall's Cup into the final stage and must the finish line upright to ensure one of his biggest career victories. Carlstrom allowed House to take too many time bonuses in the morning race and then missed the early break group in the afternoon and missed out on the King of the Mountain time bonuses as well. But with three lower order riders in the breakaway group, Carlstrom still held on to win the Tamar Valley Resort King of the Mountain Championship. The Events Tasmania Sprint Championship will see Patrick Shaw (Victoria) take a 17-point lead into the final stage, whilst in the Country Club Tasmania Criterium Championship, Wesley Sulzberger leads McLachlan by 9-points. The final stage will include 15 intermediate sprints, which means Carlstrom will have to be on his game early to reel in House. But to throw a spanner in the works for Carlstrom could be Shaw, who needs the points to ensure he wins the sprinter's title. There are so many scenarios that it guarantees the final stage will be an exciting one. How it unfoldedFormer Finland national road champion Kjell Carlstrom made a bad tactical error in the afternoon climb from George Town to Scottsdale over 91.9 km, the longest race of the tour. Carlstrom had handed back 15 seconds to tour leader Kristian House (England) in the morning stage criterium at George Town, but was presented with six hill climbs one Category 2 and three Category 3 rates in which to peg the clock back. But Carlstrom - along with all other GC challengers - ignored three young riders - Chris Jory (NSW), Reuben Young (SA) and Daniel Furmston (Tasmania), who jumped off the front of the pack as soon as the race started in George Town. Jory, Young and Furmston were away for 77 km before the peloton eventually reeled them in. Whilst none of the young trio of escapees were a threat to GC, they were allowed some leeway, but the damage they did to Carlstrom was in the intermediate sprints and king of the mountain sprints, taking away the time bonuses that Carlstrom should have been claiming. When the trio were eventually caught there was only one KOM left and that was taken by Victorian teenager William Ford ahead of Tasmanian duo Ryan Sullivan and Josh Wilson. Young and Jory to their credit were able to hang on to the peleton and both claimed top 10 finishes, whilst Furmston was spent and limped across the finish line in 19th place, losing 2.20 minutes on the winner. Sulzberger and McLachlan mirrored the quinella from the morning stage, while Queensland's David Kemp finished third in a bunch sprint. Sulzberger's win maintained his 33-point lead over McLachlan in the Tattersall's Cup and with only one stage remaining, needs only to stay upright and get to the finish line.
