Tour of Utah aspires to be the third great American stage race

With the impressive ambition to rank as a test alongside recent high-profile American stafe races the Tour de Georgia and the Tour of California, the six-stage Tour of Utah kicks off Monday, August 7th in Provo, Utah.

Created by brothers Jason, Scott, and Michael Preston (all licensed USCF cyclists) - who realized that the alpine climbing that makes European competitive stage racing the toughest in the world was nearly identical to the mountain passes that are ridden by local Utah athletes every day - the Tour of Utah challenges racers with 730-kilometers of road racing, criteriums and a time trial before finishing with a brutal 183-kilometer road race that ends at the 7,800 foot Snowbird Ski resort in Little Cottonwood Canyon, Utah.

The race started in 2004 as the four-day Thanksgiving Point Stage Race and Cycling Festival. In the event’s inaugural year, the three Preston brothers not only organized and promoted the event but also competed. In 2005, the Thanksgiving Point Stage Race was rebranded the Tour of Utah to better represent the end goal of bringing state-wide stage racing to Utah. With the help of the Utah Sports Commission, Larry H. Miller Sandy Subaru, Thanksgiving Point, and a host of other supporting sponsors, the first annual Tour of Utah drew a full Pro/1/2 field and hosted nearly 500 competitors from across the United States in a six-stage event that spanned Salt Lake, Utah, and Juab counties.

After a successful 2005 event, the Preston borthers realized that the Tour of Utah had potential to become one of the grand American Tours; alongside the Tour de Georgia and the newer, yet tremendously successful Tour of California. With every intention of growing the event organically, Three Peaks invited local cycling pro Burke Swindlehurst to assist in the planning of a race that is now deemed America’s “toughest tour.” The 2006 Tour of Utah is poised to showcase “epic” climbs, exhilarating sprints, and city circuit courses that are challenging yet easily accessible to the public.

In addition to race courses that are some of the toughest in North America, we are excited to welcome top professional teams that competed in both the Tour de Georgia and the Tour of California. You can rest assured that as you stand at the finish line at Snowbird Summer Resort, you will watch one of the “toughest” competitive cyclists on this continent raise his hands in victory as he is crowned the winner of the Tour of Utah.
