In cycling, Schumacher leads the game!
Stage win to comeback man Alberto Loddo

It's difficult to have a more boring race than this one. In the fourth stage of Circuit de la Sarthe-Pays de la Loire, there was a breakaway of three riders, Lloyd Mondory (AG2R), Stéphane Pétilleau (Bretagne-Jean Floc'h) and Stéphane Bergès (Agritubel), whose lead reached 5'30. CSC paced in front of the bunch and eventually got some help from T-Mobile, Gerolsteiner and Panaria. The gap was bridged just in time and there was another bunch sprint. After coming second two days in a row, it was finally winning time for Alberto Loddo of Selle Italia ahead of Stefan Schumacher, who is the new leader of the race. And that was it.
Loddo was of course happy to celebrate the second win of his chaotic career in Europe, the previous one being a stage in the Vuelta ao Algarve in 2003 when he was racing for Lampre. He also won a stage in Tour of Qatar as he started as a professional in 2002, and for his second year he won both a stage and GC in Qatar, but after the 2004 season with Saunier Duval, he was left with no contract. "I received a lot of promises, though!," he laughed. "Promises, promises… But last year I did only three races as an amateur. I'll never thank Gianni Savio enough for putting me back on track with Selle Italia-Diquigiovanni."
Savio couldn't complain about Loddo's re-start. He won two stages in the Vuelta Tachira in Venezuela in January and four stages in the Tour of Chile in March. "I was frustrated with coming twice second in this race here," he said. "My team left me with 500 meters to go. I did the rest by myself. 300 meters before the line, I was on Schumacher's wheel. I had seen his team did a lot of work for him and I liked this finish with a little climb before the last 100 meters. I was also lucky to find an open road on the left side."

Schumacher wasn't too disappointed to come second though, because that meant taking the lead over from CSC's Brian Vandborg through the bonus time. "I will try to keep the jersey," the German said. "But I know it will be difficult because CSC has a really strong team, maybe they'll try to attack me and it's not easy to control the whole bunch with only four teammates since Georg Totschnig had to return home after stage 1 because he was sick."
The Gerolsteiner recruit is confident though. "I heard that the final circuit tomorrow is very hard with a steep climb but normally I'm in good shape. I was OK in Flanders and I've prepared well for the Ardennes classics." Hopefully there will be more action for the conclusion of the four day race.
