Redlands Classic - 2.2California, USA, March 31-April 3, 2005Main Page Results Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 1 - April 1: Oak Glen Road Race, 171.7/129kmJittery Joe's-Kalahari on top while Health Net confronts bad luck and the Sun shines on QuarkBy Eddie Monnier The Jittery Joe's-Kalahari team rode to victory in the tough Glen Oak Road Race stage, while race leaders Health Net overcame some bad luck to narrowly keep Wherry in the race leader's jersey. Your correspondent was lucky enough to grab a ride in the Health Net presented by Maxxis team vehicle alongside team director Jeff Corbett and mechanic Nick Legan. With Health Net's Chris Wherry in the leader's jersey, the vehicle occupied the number one spot in the caravan. How it unfolded In spite of this being just his first NRC race following the post-cyclocross season break, Ben Jacque-Maynes (Kodak Gallery/Sierra Nevada) turned in an excellent third-best prologue. When asked if he thought Health Net could be unseated, he told cyclingnews, "It will take a concerted effort by every team that has something to gain...to not be afraid to put itself out there, gamble a bit. If every team does that, instead of succumbing to the dominance, there's a chance for a mix up [in the general classification]." Eric Wohlberg (Symmetrics), sitting fourth on GC, was likewise ready to make things difficult for Health Net, "We're going to race this thing as hard as we can." Race leader Chris Wherry, rejuvenated after the winter break, wasn't worried, "Our team is obviously so deep. We'll do what we need to take control of the race. I feel like we have five or six of the best climbers in the race. As long as we get to the bottom of [Oak Glen] in good position, which we'll make sure we do, then I think we'll be in good position at the end of the day." Little did Wherry know that Lady Luck wouldn't smile upon the team today. Health Net chose to tap into its depth and be aggressive in the race. Like a prizefighter that goes to work with jabs to an opponent's eye in the early rounds in order to soften it for opening later in the fight, Health Net drove the race, hitting the hills hard and setting a strong pace in the crosswind sections, putting pressure on its rivals. The field was decimated after the feed zone, just 60km into the race. None of the principle players were caught out yet, but the efforts were undoubtedly softening up some of their opponents' legs. Approaching the second KOM just before the midway mark, Curtis Gunn (Seasilver), Frank Pipp (Advantage Benefits/Endeavour), and Tyler Wren (Colavita Oil/Sutter Home) established an advantage over the field. This effort was short-lived, but set up a counter attack by six riders that lasted quite a while. On the run were Gustavo Artacho (Colavita Olive Oil/Sutter Home), Ian McGregor (Team TIAA CREF), Jake Rytlewski (Advantage Benefits/Endeavour), Omar Kem, (Subway), Chris Walker (Paul Tracy.com), and Cory Lange (Symmetrics). The break quickly ran to two minutes. Artacho was the biggest threat at 34 seconds back from Wherry, but Health Net wasn't worried, opting to keep the break on a retractable leash. Misfortune struck when workhorse Mike Sayers and fifth-placed Mike Jones hit the deck. Although banged up, the two soldiered back to the pack and went straight to the front. The team's bad luck continued when John Lieswyn and Gord Fraser, both of whom had been quite sick the last few days, had finally given all they could give to the team. The break benefited from Health Net's misfortune and extended its lead to almost four minutes with 50km remaining. The strongest team in US domestic racing was under pressure. Here's where a good director is invaluable. Health Net's Jeff Corbett used to call Redlands home, has competed in the event a few times, and has served as a team director for several editions. He put this knowledge to work to the team's benefit, keeping them informed of what was ahead and where to make the most of their efforts. Dominique Parra (Kodak Gallery/Sierra Nevada) attacked at the third KOM, forming a group of 15 riders that set off in pursuit of the leaders, whose lead Health Net had reduced to less than two minutes. Wherry and Moninger both covered the move, and Jelly Belly had the largest presence in what was now the second group, driving the pace. Missing out on the move were GC threats Wohlberg, Liam Kileen (California Giant-Village Peddlar) and Trent Lowe (Jittery Joe's-Kalahari). The six leaders sat up to wait for the second group. Jittery Joe's chased furiously, speeding the third group through the second feed zone in its effort to put Lowe into position for the climb. Their effort succeeded. All the contenders were back together shortly after the feed zone. Another break formed approaching the last feed zone, just 20km from the finish. This time, only Moninger was able to cover the move. Also present were Danny Pate (JellyBelly Pool Gel), Glen Mitchell (Kodak Gallery/Sierra Nevada), Davide Frattini (Colavita Olive Oil/Sutter Home), Brian Sheedy (Advantage Benefits Endeavour), Ivan Stevic (Aerospace Engineering) and Jake Erker (Symmetrics). None of these riders were further back than 26 seconds. Ben Jacques-Maynes, third on GC, flatted and found himself without any teammates to help chase back on. His luck paralleled Heath Net's on the day, as shortly after rejoining the group, he again had to get a wheel change and chase back on solo. With just ten kilometres remaining, the lead group held a 43-second advantage over the suffering peloton. Pate and Moninger attacked with 8km remaining and established a small gap over the others. Driven largely by Kileen for most of the climb, a group containing Wherry, Ben Brooks (Jelly Belly PoolGel), Lowe, Ivan Stevic (Aerospace Engineering), Andrew Bajadali (Vitamincottage.com), Anthony Colby (Texas Roadhouse Cycling) and Wohlberg bridged to the rest of the group with just 3km remaining. Pate and Moninger were also reabsorbed. Wherry tested everyone's legs with about 3km to go. Lowe countered and the two left the others behind. At a steep pitch just 2km from the finish, Trent Lowe put in a furious attack that Wherry could not answer and the former junior world champion mountain biker soloed to victory. Wherry said post-stage: "Trent Lowe put in a big attack. He's a snappy climber." and the Health Net frontrunner dug deep, upping his tempo to limit his loses, but he ultimately finished in second place, about 10 seconds adrift. After his win, the elated Lowe told cyclingnews, "I want to thank the guys, they worked so damn hard...we were down a lot, all into the headwind...they worked their hearts out...it was remarkable." He's still figuring out things on the road; "it's good to have somebody like Tim Johnson and Johnny Sundt always keeping me in the right spot." It looks like Lowe makes a pretty good pupil. The day's biggest GC move undoubtedly goes to Cameron Brenneman of local team Kahala-La Grange, who put in a stellar ride to finish fifth on the stage. Also a mountain biker by background, Brenneman was "very surprised" by his top-five placing; "One by one, they kept dropping off. I just kept going around." Team Health Net will look to stay out of trouble in Saturday's criterium, known as one of the hardest in America. Given the decimation in the field today and the likelihood of many riders missing the time cut, the field may be a bit smaller than usual, which should be to everyone's benefit. In spite of being so sick, both Lieswyn and Fraser managed to finish the race. Thanks to the mercy of the officials, the time cut was extended to 18% of the winner's time. While the team will do its best to recover through tomorrow's wickedly difficult criterium, the peloton may smell blood and look to topple the giant in Sunday's tough road stage. Women's race report By Jim Williams, Quark Team Manager The women's race was contested today under bright clear sunshine with the famous Santa Ana winds once again blowing. The peloton was hesitant at first to brave these winds, and most riders were seeking the shelter of the peloton when the first sprint of the day took place, with Quark rider Helen Kelly taking the points and an early lead in the sprinter's competition. Countering off the sprint was T-mobile's Ina Teutenberg, who forged herself a lead that fluctuated between one and two minutes for the next 50 km. Eventually, the wind and the solo effort wore Teutenberg down and the pack was all together for the final sprint of the day, which was once again taken by Quark's Helen Kelly, securing her the Green Jersey. Still up for grabs were the climber's jersey and stage win, and riders were eager to get a jump on the climbers before the final ascent up Oak Glen. A break containing Quark's Tina Pic, Chrissy Ruiter of Ford-Basis, Belem Guerrero of the Mexican National Team and Elizabeth Begosh of Velo Bella escaped and built up a three minute lead before the hill tilted upward. Along for the ride, protecting their team leader's position, were T-Mobile's Mari Holden and Webcor's Katheryn Curi. Once the climb up Oak Glen began it just became a matter of time before the escapees were caught and the climbers took their rightful place at the front of the peloton on a mountain top finish. Tina Pic, Quarks 'super sprinter' showed she is more than just that by staying with a select group of climbers containing Webcor's Christine Thorburn and Erinne Willock, Kim Baldwin and Kristen Armstrong of T- Mobile. Joining Pic in this group of climbers was her teammate Annette Beutler. First to attack in the final kilometres was Baldwin, whose efforts dropped Willock after Willock had done the early pace making for her yellow-clad teammate Thorburn. After Baldwin, Thorburn put in a huge pull, and T-mobile's Armstrong countered but was unable to get an advantage. With 500 metres to go Quark's Beutler attacked and left her climbing partners behind to cross the finish line in first, six seconds ahead of Baldwin and 10 ahead of Thorburn. Beutler's victory earned her the red climber's jersey and Thorburn was able to hold on to her overall lead; but the top of the GC tightened up and will make for some very interesting racing in the next two days.
