Saeco 1-2; Evans holds lead

Saeco riders finished first and second in today's second hard mountain stage of the Wiesbauer Tour, with defending champion Gerrit Glomser crossing the line first ahead of his teammate and compatriot Andreas Matzbacher. But T-Mobile wasn't far behind, with Tomas Konecny in third at 5 seconds and race leader Cadel Evans in fourth at 15 seconds, which was more than enough to keep the yellow jersey.
Today's main challenged was the Großglockner pass, a very difficult 2,430 metre climb that marked the highest point of the tour. The first rider over the summit was Konecny, despite the best efforts of Glomser. "Actually I wanted to become Glockner-king," said Glomser. "But Konecny was simply the strongest rider today on the mountain. The stage victory was my second goal. I always get better in stages and will now refine my form in Switzerland for the tour de France."
Glomser will abandon the Wiesbauer Tour now in order to compete in the Tour de Suisse, which starts on Saturday.
How it unfolded

The 148 km stage between Bad Gastein and Lienz/Tristacher See was defined by the Großglockner Pass (km 81.5), the last 13 km of which averaged nearly 10%. A group of four riders managed to get clear at the beginning of the stage, containing Björn Glasner (Team Lamonta), Frederik Willems (Vlaanderen-T Interim), Stefan Rucker (Elk Haus) and Francesco Failli (Domina Vacanze). With a steady tempo being set by T-Mobile, the leading quartet reached a 4'30 advantage approaching the foot of the climb (km 60), but from then on it was literally an uphill battle to stay away.
As expected, the attacks began in the peloton at the foot of the climb, as Gerrit Glomser and Hans-Peter Obwaller opened the hostilities on the third corner. The lead group was caught and dropped in quick time, as the field thinned out over the tough climb. T-Mobile's Tomas Konecny was the quickest to the top in a new record time of 47'46, beating Australian Paul Crake (Corratec Austria-Arboe) and Mitja Mahoric (Perutnina). Vandelli, Van Huffel and Glomser were next, while race leader Evans was 1'33 behind at the top.
Konecny won the next climb of Hochtor shortly afterwards, followed by Glomser and Van Huffel (Vlaanderen), while Andreas Matzbacher (Saeco) and Evans were fourth and fifth respectively. There followed a high speed descent, and Evans lost more time on Konecny - 3 minutes at one stage, which effectively gave the Czech the leader's jersey.

Konecny, Glomser and Matzbacher got together and stayed away until the finish, but bit by bit, the chasing group with Evans managed to reduce the three minute deficit to just 15 seconds at the finish, where Evans was fourth behind Glomser, Matzbacher and Konecny. Although the yellow jersey was never in danger of leaving the T-Mobile camp, the tactics today were reminiscent of Cunego and Simoni in the Giro d'Italia.
