In today's longest and hardest stage of the Redlands Bicycle Classic, Canada's Roland Green edged out Chris Horner in a strategically textbook race, while the women's race was won by Saturn's Judith Arndt with a monstrous solo effort. Arndt attacked less than 10 kilometres into the 130-kilometer race and stayed away to the finish, causing a major shakeup in the general classification.
|
In the men's race, an early attack of six riders stayed clear until the final 2,000-foot ascent up Oak Glen. Their 2-minute advantage was quickly erased in an attack by race leader Horner, who was pursued by Green. Saturn's Soren Petersen bridged the gap to the leaders, where Green put in a series of attacks that eventually shed Petersen and left he and Horner to fight out the stage win. Green jumped in the final 300 meters to edge out Horner, who looked quite content with his second place.
Asked about the strategy for the day, Green sounded as though he had it all worked out.
"The breakaway was in check the whole time. If they had more than 3 minutes then I would have been concerned, but we kept it in control and had it down to about two-and-a-half minutes before the climb."
"I think I did a faster time last year, but we gave away four and a half minutes. This year I figured I could get back three minutes so we didn't want it to get beyond that."
Horner's team also seemed to be aware and the Prime Alliance colours were nearly always present at the front of the peloton and the gap rarely got much beyond the 3-minute point. About the duel on Oak Glen, Horner had a lot of praise for Horner, and his team.
|
"Pate pulled me up, got me in a good position at the bottom of the climb. I was comfortable in about 5th spot back. When it got to the really steep part I opened a gap on everyone, with just me and Roland. Soren Petersen bridged across. Roland kept attacking me. He was probably the best by far on the climb, but just not quite good enough to get rid of me."
While looking strong and confident, Horner didn't sound as though the race was settled yet,
"I'm sure Roland and I will keep a close eye on each other. And Soren Petersen is probably 3rd on GC after today. That ride he did...(pause)...he did a fantastic ride on the climb. I still expect a big fight."
|
In the women's race, everyone seemed to know what Saturn was up to, but no one expected the day to go as it did. Arndt attacked on the first little climb, less than 10 km from the start. Rona's Andrea Hannos jumped right on her wheel,
"It wasn't a plan" she said, "She went and I was right there, went with her and sat on."
The pair quickly gained time, and by the first climb of the day had over 7 minutes on the peloton. But with 90 km still to race, and Arndt doing all of the work, it still appeared that the chase would mount. It never did.
"It was a quiet race," said Jeanson. "Nothing was moving (in reaction to the break). I'm a little bit confused."
At one point there were five or six small chase groups, each containing one Rona rider, but nothing came of any of them, and with 40 km to go the breakaway was up by more than 12 minutes.
"It wasn't planned to stay away," stated Arndt "Once they caught me, the next (teammate) would go. It was a team strategy. Geneviève is very strong, so we have to play games. I just tried to go steady and to save a little for the climb."
|
At the base of the climb, Arndt attacked and was finally able to lose her shadow,
"The hill was tough for me, because I'm not a pure climber," added Hannos, "but I'm happy with the way I climbed." Hannos finished 3 minutes back, with Jeanson soloing in nearly 10 minutes down.
"At the bottom of the climb I didn't know the time gap, but I felt really good. I then did a time trial up the hill. I was alone the whole time."
Jeanson is now not in the Yellow Jersey for the first time since stage one of last year. She's more than 7 minutes down on a very tired Arndt.
"I was scared that Geneviève would catch me on the climb. When you go 120 km by yourself, it's really hard. You just try and keep going. The last 5 km I felt really bad. I had cramps...I can't explain. Every part of my body hurts."
She then added, "I think to do solo breakaways like this all the time (pauses), would make you crazy."
Her seemingly insurmountable lead seems less so when remembering how Jeanson went solo, in yellow, and gained more than 6 minutes during last year's final stage. Asked whether she would attempt something similar, she smiled,
"Yeah, I gained a lot of time. It's a nice circuit. It's hard and very technical, so it's better to go alone because you can turn and go full speed. So, yeah, maybe. We'll see how I feel."
Asked about the rest of the race, Arndt looked concerned. "It's a hard question now, because I don't feel really good. But I think by tomorrow, I'll recover. And we have a really strong team, so.." pausing and smiling, "I think we have a good chance to win."

Roland Green, 1st stage
"Chris attacked at the bottom of the climb. Soren Petersen bridged up to us and it was just the three of us. I started attacking. I put in about 5 or 6 attacks and each time Chris wouldn't pull through. He has no need to with the race lead. I didn't want to pull so it became cat and mouse. So I started riding tempo to put some time on Klasna."
"Although Sunday is a really hard race, you still expect the teams to control it."
"I'm glad I never ended up with the jersey here."
"We did a great job today, though, the mountain bike team. We're mostly mountain bikers, the team (Canadian National), and they did a perfect job today. They fed me, brought me bottles, kept me out of the wind, and did what they needed to."
Chris Horner, 1st GC
On his team:
"They had one foot in the grave and one foot on the bike. They just refused to quit until they got to the bottom of the climb."
"I mean they dug really deep. You got to take it one day at a time, huh. You can't give any less than what they did. They'll get some rest tomorrow because it will be a late start to the race and then a fairly short criterium. It will be fast and hard, but it will be short.
"We got left with just three of us, Danny Pate, Mike Creed and myself. And of course I can't do any work until we get to the climb, so Danny Pate and Mike Creed took pulls for 15 km, just the two of them."
On his duel with Green:
"At one point in time we just come to an understanding that we're not going to drop each other, so we might as well get as much time on every one else as we can. And I'm not concerned about the win. If I can take it I'm going to take it. But if I can get maximum time on everybody and we can work together, then he can have the win, and honestly he's the best guy out there. You know, I don't want to make it sound like I gave the win away, cause I didn't. He was the strongest guy on the climb, but if we work together we can put in maximum time so that on Sunset we have more room to play."
On the rest of the race:
"I'm sure Roland and I will keep a close eye on each other. And Soren Petersen is probably 3rd on GC after today. That ride he did, he did a fantastic ride on the climb. I still expect a big fight."
Giana Roberge, Saturn team director
On hearing that her strategy looked genius:
"I wish I could take credit, after a ride like today. But it's all here (pointing to Arndt). Not many people in the world can do a ride like that."
"If you want to beat her (Jeanson) you better start at the beginning."
"Right out of the start, that's where she attacked, almost a half mile into the race, that's where she started. She asked me "What should I do" and I said, you know, keep going, because Rona was establishing a chase, and there was kinda some commotion, the break had already gone, Mari had a mechanical, there was a crash, so it was sort of like, well you just keep going and the chase will get organized and that will set Lyne or Petra or someone up nicely, so it wasn't actually planned from the start like that, but there's an opportunity...
"Was the plan for her to just attack early and see what happens? " Yes, 'cause she's still a threat right, so it made sense to send her up the road and see what kind of commotion we could cause. So, that was the plan."
"She was busy watching Lyne and Lyne's instructions were, if you have a teammate that's a threat in that break, then you sit."
"It never matters who wins as long its Saturn. To be honest it's a benefit to us that we have that attitude. Kim Davidge in the break would have worked too, if that's the way things had worked out."
Judith Arndt, 1st stage and GC
"It was a team strategy. Geneviève is very strong, so we have to play games. We are the best team, so...It wasn't planned to stay away. Once they caught me, the next (teammate) would go. I just tried to go steady and to save a little for the climb."
Did you do all of the work?
"Of course."
"I was scared that Geneviève would catch me on the climb. When you go 120 km by yourself, it's really hard. You just try and keep going. The last 5 km I felt really bad. I had cramps...I can't explain. Every part of my body hurts."
"I think to do solo breakaways like this all the time (pauses), would make you crazy."
About tomorrow:
"It's a hard question now, because I don't feel really good. But I think by tomorrow, I'll recover. And we have a really strong team, so (smiling) I think we have a good chance to win."
Geneviève Jeanson, 3rd stage and GC

On her strategy for the rest of the race:
"You know what? I don't know."
"I felt really good today. At the bottom of the climb I didn't know the time gap, but I felt really good. I then did a time trial up the hill. I was alone the whole time."
About the break:
"I knew at one point they had 12 minutes, and 12 minutes or 20, it's about the same. It was a quiet race. Nothing was moving (in reaction to the break). I'm a little bit confused."
"I think my teammates did an awesome job. Andrea held on to Judith the whole time. And my other teammates were always in the breaks. I'm very proud of Andrea and my team."
On the Sunset Road Race, where last year she gained 6 minutes:
"Yeah, I gained a lot of time. It's a nice circuit. It's hard and very technical, so it's better to go alone because you can turn and go full speed."
Can we look forward to something similar"
"Yeah, maybe. We'll see how I feel."
Andrea Hannos, 2nd stage and GC
"I didn't work with her at all. I just managed to stay with her."
"I wish we didn't gain so much time. It wasn't good for us. But I was happy with the way I climbed."
"I expected we would get brought back, because she (Arndt) was doing all the work."
"The hill was tough for me, because I'm not a pure climber. I just did my best."
