Chris Horner of Prime Alliance won his second stage in as many days at the Redlands Classic, while Saturn's Lyne Bessette took a few seconds off of Rona's Geneviève Jeanson's lead. Generally thought of as a good stage for sprinters and non-GC contenders, the Highland Circuit Race became a major war for the yellow jersey in both the men's and women's races.
The 4.5 km course through the residential neighbourhoods of Highland, California featured a mainly flat course with 20 turns and one steep 150-foot climb just before the finish. The women raced a short but intense 13 laps (59.5 km), while the men completed 18 (82 km) laps. The weather was unseasonably cool with a stiff wind, making breakaway attempts very taxing.
In the men's race, leader Chris Horner didn't foresee any trouble but was leery of Klasna and his Saturn team. "He's one of the best riders in the United States. There are always guys that you have to worry about, and he's definitely one of them." But he added, "We've got a strong team. We've just got to set a good tempo and we'll be fine."
|
It turned out to be a tad more difficult than it sounded as Klasna started a breakaway with about 12 laps to go. His 3-man group didn't look too serious until his Saturn teammate Harm Jansen bridged the gap a couple of laps later.
"It killed me going across", stated Jansen.
Still, with the two working together along with US Postal's Dave Zabriske and Mercury's Mike Sayers the group was able to gain 45 seconds, and for most of the race it seemed as though it was going to stay that way.
"Sayers' didn't work much, which was kind of frustrating", said Klasna. Although this was cleared up by Horner, "Why would he? He was in there for the stage win. He doesn't care about the GC."
The group still had more than 30 seconds with two laps remaining when the chase group put the hammer down, catching the breakaway with one lap to go. It was then that race leader Horner was able to grab the wheel of Sayers up the final climb and come around him to win going away.
"My team was great today," said Horner, "I didn't have to do any real work until the end. I thought we would catch the break earlier. I was a little worried. With 2 laps to go I told Danny (teammate Danny Pate) to sell out, figuring if he could bring me back to 10 or 20 seconds I could bridge myself. I owe the day to Danny."
Klasna was expectedly disappointed,
"Yeah, I'm disappointed, but I still feel great." He stated, " With 3 or 4 laps to go I thought for sure we could hold it."
Tomorrow's stage is the toughest of the race, with the finish atop 4,883 foot (1488m) Oak Glen. Klasna assured it wasn't over yet, "I've done well in the past. We'll see what happens."
|
Saturn's team director Giana Roberge had promised "to make life very challenging" for Jeanson and, true to her word, Petra Rossner launched an attack just 3 laps in. Rona absorbed it, as well as a few more, until Team USA's Mari Holden took off solo with 6 laps to go.
"I saw Saturn and Rona looking at each other and just decided to go."
Her lead grew each lap until it reached 2 minutes, at which point Rona decided to chase.
"When she attacked nobody wanted to chase her" said Jeanson, "but when she got 2 minutes it became scary because she is a very good rider, so we decided to go on the offensive."
|
Eventually only Jeanson could chase, with Bessette clinging to her wheel.
When her advantage went to more than 2 minutes, race leader Jeanson decided it was too much and left the lead bunch, shadowed by Bessette.
"My job today was to hide and to rest", said Bessette, "We know she's (Jeanson) an awesome climber and Oak Glen is a real hard stage. So the more energy I have, the better, and the less she has, the better, so maybe it will equal out."
The two pulled back over a minute during the last two laps and passed the laboring Holden just before the finish, where a fresh-looking Bessette easily sprinted away for the win.
"I wanted Mari to win, but when she jumped, I had to jump with her" said Jeanson.
Holden shrugged, "It didn't quite work out, but almost."
Reporting from Steve Edwards and Reed Bartlett
Lyne Bessette, winner stage 2
"They owe me a dinner (her team) for a little bet we had yesterday."
To celebrate:
"We'll finish a bottle of wine that they (team) gave me for my birthday".
On her host family:
"They're the greatest. They make us dinner every night. We're going to take them out to dinner on Friday or Saturday."
Do you get tired of seeing Jeanson all the time:
"I'm not tired of seeing her. I think we are making the races."
On Holden's breakaway:
"It was good for us, because we don't have the jersey to defend. I was very patient today. Usually, I'm not patient but I'm working on the ability to wait."
"The wind really had an effect today."
Strategy:
"I didn't do anything today - a little bit of work at the end. I feel good."
"To attack and make Rona chase, to make all their team tired. Petra and Judith did a lot of work. They attacked, like, three times each."
On whether she was happy with her time trial:
"Yeah, I always want to do better but I haven't worked on the time trial yet this year."
Mari Holden, 3rd place in stage, 3rd GC
On her attack:
"I wanted to maybe get a stage win today. When I saw Saturn and Rona looking at each other, I thought here's an opportunity, so I went."
On getting passed just before the end:
"I was dead going up the hill. I didn't have it. I was hoping for a cat and mouse game back there (Bessette and Jeanson) but they didn't do it."
On the wind:
"It was pretty hard. Good training though. I'm trying to ride myself into shape. All of February I was sick. I didn't have any training going into racing. I'm just starting to get going."
On the GC (she's 3rd):
"It would be nice. It would be a real bonus."
Geneviève Jeanson, 1st GC:
"I felt great. My legs are a little sore."
On doing all the work with Bessette:
"I expected that. I got a good workout."
Did she contest the sprint:
"Yeah, but I knew I would be more tired than her."
On her time trial where she would have finished 21st with the men:
CN: "Did you know?"
GJ: "Yeah, I looked at the results on cyclingnews, actually. I don't know, maybe the conditions were different for the men. Maybe it was colder, I don't know, I though it was quite funny, really. I was quite surprised with my time. To go under 9:30 was the objective for me and my coach, but I wasn't sure that I could do it - but I looked at my computer with about 500 meters to go and it said 8-something and I was, like, okay I can do it!"
On her host family:
"I'm having a great time here in Redlands. I have a wonderful host family."
On tomorrow:
"It's going to be another big day. Today wasn't too long, but it was intense. Tomorrow is going to be patience, and to be aware, and not to fall asleep. I expect everything (from Saturn). You have to be ready for it. My team is in good shape and we'll be ready for tomorrow."
Trent Klasna, 2nd GC
On Horner's strength:
"Oh yeah, he's real strong right now."
On Team Saturn:
"We're ready to win the race. I don't think there's a better team out there."
On the break:
"Harm was great. Zabriske was great. Sayers' didn't work much, which was kind of frustrating. I thought for sure we had it with three or four laps to go. We did what we could."
Chris Horner, 1st stage and GC:
"I didn't have to do anything until the last part. Sayers punched so hard. I was following his wheel and just thought, I'm gonna go. I didn't know how far ahead I was. I tried to look under my arm but I wasn't about to turn around to see who might be back there."
On the break:
"I wanted it to go. I figured that Navigators would have to chase. I though we would catch them with about 5 laps to go. I was starting to think I'd made a mistake."
"I was a little worried. With 2 laps to go I told Danny (teammate Danny Pate) to sell out, figuring if he could bring me back to 10 or 20 seconds I could bridge myself. I owe the day to Danny."
On tomorrow:
"Trent's so aggressive. He's a great rider and goes 100%, and Saturn is the most dangerous team. But we have to cover everyone before the climb. We can't afford to sit there and let anyone get 5 minutes before the climb."
John Lieswyn, 2nd on stage:
"I was closing on Horner for a while, but it was too late."
"I'm pretty much discounted for the GC, which is fine with me. But I trained hard all winter, so we'll see. Top 3 is the goal"
"Without Greg (Henderson) I wouldn't have been there. He pulled me from, like, 40th to 20th."
