By Steve Edwards in Riverside
The 18th annual Redlands Classic Stage Race got under way today with a 5 km time trial up Mt Rubidoux in Riverside, California. The unseasonably warm temperatures that have prevailed across the western US for the last month suddenly ended as non-forecasted rain showers drenched the streets of Redlands just hours prior to the start. Fortunately Riverside, just a dozen or so miles away, was spared most of the moisture and the race was held in dry, cool, and blustery conditions. With a course ascending nearly 150 meters in 5K, it would most likely be a day for the climbers.

In the women's race, last year's winner Geneviève Jeanson of Team Rona hammered to a time of 9:25, more than 35 seconds ahead of 2nd place finisher Judith Arndt. Saturn nabbed places 2 through 4 with their big three: Arndt, Lyne Bessette, and Petra Rossner. Despite Jeanson's clear dominance, Saturn team director Giana Roberge made it clear that the race was far from over.
"We are a very tactical, technical team. And tomorrow's course, with 20 corners, gives us a chance to make life (for Jeanson) very challenging, especially when we don't care which of us wins. We can play games all day long. It doesn't matter to us who we send up the road. It could be Judith, it could be Petra, it could be Lyne. There comes a point where it doesn't matter how strong a rider is, she can't chase everything. She's got a very strong team, I don't want to take anything away from them, but so do we. I really think it's going to come down to who has the better team."
Conversely, Jeanson's thoughts weren't on tactics at all, at least for the moment,
"I didn't have any real strategy. I just rode the best that I could."
About the upcoming days she didn't sound as though she had anything special in mind, "My preparation was just about the same as last year. I spent most of the winter training in Arizona. I'll ride as hard as I can."
|
Roberge sounded more analytical about what about to be played out over the rest of the week,
"Last year we didn't get a chance to race because we lost Ina and Lyne right away. This year, we both have full teams, we both have healthy teams, and we both have good strong teams. It'll be good." After a short pause and an excited sigh, she added, " If you're into bike racing, I think it's going to be a good one to watch."
One accident marred the day when Biogen's Lisa Peck reportedly crashed into a team coach and broke her wrist. Details are sketchy but she did get up and finish the stage. We'll hopefully have the details sorted out tomorrow.

The men's race features a similar duel amongst a very strong field. Last year's winner Trent Klasna of Saturn conceded 14 seconds to the prior year's winner, Chris Horner of Prime Alliance. Navigator's Chris Baldwin finished third, just one second back, while seconds separated the next six riders.
Once again, it looks as though it's going to come down to team tactics. Klasna's Saturn team was the number one team for the day, but Horner seemed to like his chances,
"I feel fantastic. I haven't had to really go hard at any of the races, like Visalia, so it's just a matter of whether or not the team can keep me fresh, and I think they will. We have a great team with some really talented riders and if they get me to the climb (on Oak Glen) then the pressure will be on my shoulders."
|
Unlike in the women's race, Horner doesn't foresee any problems in tomorrow's flat-ish stage.
"We've just got to set a good tempo. Not to take anything away from tomorrow, it's a great stage. But it's a stage better suited for riders that are out of the GC. They have a little more room to win the stage, then everything will be put on Oak Glen. Just to have the team get me to the base of Oak Glen fresh and relaxed. Then after that we'll decide the race."
Also, conspicuously missing from yesterday's team listing was the Marco Polo squad. Marco Polo is an international cycling club that just happens to field a division one team featuring riders from all over the globe. Working with no budget, they still somehow managed to ride in many world tours last year, including team wins in the Tour du Faso and the Tour of Maroc. With this year's foreign entrants at Redlands lacking due to budget constraints, Marco Polo is by far the most international team in the field. Then again, they usually are.
