The top three overall placings after Day three of Wildside MTB race have remained the same after a very hot and fast paced day. Sid Taberlay extended his lead to 10.02minute (4.23.24) from Jai Crawford (4.33.26) and Mark Leis (4.45.34), all of Hobart. With one leg to go tomorrow in Strahan, the first two placings could really only change if Taberlay experiences technical problems or has a spill on the 31km race out to Hell's Gates, Ocean beach and back.
Today's tracks and trails must have suited most of the other category winners as they also extended or maintained their leads. The most significant increase was in the women's category. AIS and Subaru/ Gary Fisher team rider, Mary Grigson extended her lead from Eleanor Paterson of Hobart from 38 minute to 1.01 hours (5.20.45). She is placed sixth overall and has a good chance to climb further up the rankings in tomorrow's final fierce race.
The race is guaranteed to be hotly contended along Ocean Beach and through the twists and turns of single track in the pine forests between Masters category riders Damien Grundy (AIS MTBing coach) and local Bill Chilvers of Nile who is currently second behind Grundy by five minutes. Chilvers described himself on the application form as a "weekend warrior" but has proven consistently over the race to be challenging some of the most experienced riders in the field, placing eigth overall to date.
Launceston team "Disco Devils", Richard Quinn, Jason Andersch and Diana Dickenson hold their lead (5.50.22) despite Quinn's rear tyre leaking on the count down causing him to have to change it in a hurry and start last in the race.
