Despite being totally covered in mud and many having blood oozing from cuts and scrapes, riders completing Day two of the four day mountainbiking event were exclaiming words such as "awesome", "brilliant" and "loved that ride."
Sid Taberlay (Mens U23), Mary Grigson (Womens), Mark Leis (Mens Open), Bill Chilvers (Mens Masters) and the Team Disco Devils - sponsored by Charles St Pantry, Garrotts, Ptersons, Foot and Playsted (R.Quinn, J Andersch, D,Dickenson) have retained their overall leads in respective categories. With both Sid and Mary winning both stages of the day.
The first competition stage of the day was a 12.5 km.ride along mainly very muddy single track with a steady climb through dense rainforest to a saddle between Mt Black and Mt Murchison. The trail then changed to an old horse trail and 4WD track. This section demanded respect and tested many with some walking both up and down the major climb due to very rocky, muddy and technical conditions. Dean Vincent of Hobart finished in the top ten and said that it was a brilliant ride. "Testing but totally enjoyable."
The second stage of the day started with a gruelling King of the Mountain on the road through old Williamstown. Points were awarded to the first rider in each category. Winners were Mary Grigson, ACT (Women's), Sid Taberlay,Tas (MensU/23), Ian Bridges-Webb,NSW ( Mens Masters), Jason Andersch, Tas ( Team "Disco Devils"), Thomas Hawthorn, Tas (Mens Open).
The riders then flew along the old tramway to Montezuma Falls were the clock was stopped to allow riders to go individually over the suspension bridge which is sited below the falls above a 30 - 40m drop below to the river. It was not a crossing for the light hearted. Australia's leading female cyclist, Mary Grigson said the the enforced stop gave riders "An opportunity to really stop and enjoy the scenery. It was beautiful." She said that so often in races you don't have that opportunity to appreciate where you are.
After the excitement of the fast and muddy ride from the falls to the Murchison Highway they cruised into Zeehan for a well earnt rest. There is a 4.5km time trial through the Spray Tunnel in the morning followed by a further 18km competition stage and two cruising stages.
