Ever-vigilant Hunter notches up anotherBy Tommy Campbell in Melaka Robert Hunter (Mapei-Quick Step) took today's stage of Telekom Malaysia Le Tour de Langkawi and kept his place at the top of the leader board. Hunter, from Johannesburg in South Africa has now led from day one in Putrajaya and at the mid-point in the 10 day event he is in a commanding position, 1 minute and 49 seconds ahead of the Colombian Dario Hernan Munoz (Columbia-Selle). Mickael Pichon (Bonjour) of France is in third place, two minutes off the lead. Since the start of the event Hunter has been very active, controlling the race and not letting anybody else take the initiative and have a chance of knocking him from the lead.
The 129.7km stage from Bangi to Melaka was active from the start with the competitors having to negotiate at least fourteen traffic calmers in the first 20kms of competition. Once on the main highway Thomas Voeckler of Bonjour and Innar Mandoja from Ag2r Prevoyance slipped off the front of the main peloton and steadily built up a lead, which had reached over three minutes at the third category King of the Mountains prime at 30kms. The peloton came up the prime at a brisk pace and for no apparent reason a split occurred and 31 riders went clear. It was a very representative group that included the race leader and two of his team, Charlie Wegilius and David Garcia Canada who were to aid and abet him in his quest for victory at the stage in the historic town of Melaka. Also present in the lead group was winner of the event in '99 and last year, Paolo Lanfranchi. Lanfranchi has recovered from the injury that nearly side-lined him from the defence of his title when he crashed while training on the TT course a number of days before the start of the event. Lanfranchi also had back up, with Antonio Salomone and Marco Battiston and Alberto Elli (punctured and never back on) of team Alexia Alluminio. The main peloton made no real effort to haul the breakaway back and within kilometres the escape had been successful. At the head of the race, the leaders quickly became aware that a chasing group, which included sixteen of the twenty-two teams, were now bearing down on them and sensibly they adjusted their speed before being finally caught.
Back down the road the peloton obviously believed that this year's Tour de Langkawi was within the group at the head of the race, and they started to lose the impetus that might have brought them back into contention. Up front the group were anxious to share the pace, as they were fully aware that this year's silverware was within in their grasp. Lanfranchi's team was the most strongly represented of the 33 in front unfortunately Alberto Elli punctured at the 44km mark with the lead at two minutes plus. From then on it was all go from the leaders who finished with had a margin of nearly 15 minutes on the peloton. At least the Malaysian national team had some consolation when their riders Shahrulneeza Razali, Seong Hoong Tsen and Mohamod Yusof Abd Nasir finished in the first three places in that big group's forlorn sprint for the line. Also in that group and the big loser of the day was Italy's Andrea Tafi, Mapei-Quickstep, a long-time favourite of the Malaysian crowds: "I was in the wrong place at the wrong time and missed the split," the 35-year old champion said ruefully, adding that from here on in his efforts will be concentrated on trying to score a stage win to set the seal on what will be his last appearance in this tour. Fortune favoured the lead group as they just had passed the 50km to go board when a herd of cattle decided to amble across the highway, causing a little consternation among the team support vehicles who braked to avoid having beef for dinner later in the week. With the main bunch dropping further and further behind, the now 31-strong leading group worked steadily at building their lead, with Hunter and his team keeping a watchful eye for any breakaway attempts. In the last 10km, Bonjour's Jimmy Engoulvent went off the front of the break but despite getting a lead of 15 seconds, his attempt at victory came to an abrupt end on the outskirts of the town. To add insult to injury he was then dropped from the lead group with 4km to go. Australian time-trial champion Nathan O'Neill (Ceramiche Panneria) launched an opportunist attack down the left-hand side of the road but the ever-vigilant Hunter spotted the move and jumped across the gap from the other side of the group. It looked like a winning move for a moment but the Index-Alexia boys closed the gap down.
From then on in, it was Hunter and his team mates controlling things from the front until the final metres. For a moment, Hunter looked boxed in but he skilfully extricated himself from the melee and from 100 metres out it was a shoulder-to-shoulder battle between him and Antonio Salamone. The yellow tunic on the left side of the road, threw his bike at the line with perfect timing and his last kick ensured a victory by half-a-wheel. Said Hunter: "When I arrived in Malaysia I would have been happy to get a single stage win. To take three stages and be in the yellow jersey is fantastic in itself but it is also giving me valuable UCI (Union Cycliste Internationale) points. "My Mapei-Quickstep team-mates Charlie Wegelius and David Canada Gracia rode brilliantly for me, chasing down any dangerous moves and keeping me in just the right position." Japan's Kijo Fukushima was another happy guy, giving his legs a rest yet managing to to finish with the main pack. He stays in the white jersey of mountains leader and should stay in the polka dot jersey for another couple of days. Also in that elite group was a brother of yesterday's hero of the stage up Fraser Hill, Shinichi Fukushima who had no team support as one of the back up cars was relieved of his duties because of a misdemeanour. "I just was relieved to see the finish, but I know the Mavic boys would have been on hand if I had run into trouble," said Shinichi. Photography
