Di Biase leads Hunter homeBy Steve Thomas in Bentong
South African Robert Hunter (Mapei-Quick Step) has kept his leader's yellow jersey after finishing second in stage 4 from Tapah to Bentong. Hunter showed his excellent form by making the 15 man lead group after the peloton split on the Fraser's Gap climb. The leaders eventually finished two minutes in front of the peloton, with Moreno Di Biase (Mobilvetta) taking the stage win in front of Hunter and Frédéric Amorison (Lotto). Up until the fourth stage of this year's Tour de Langkawi, many of the riders would not have believed that the seaside paradise of Malaysia had any serious mountains to deal with. And if they did, they surely wouldn't be up to that much. Even many of the seasoned veterans of the Langkawi race may have long held the belief that there were only two climbs in all of Malaysia; the cruelly long and arduous drag to Cameron Highlands, and the fearsomely steep mother of a highway to hell, which is the road to Genting Highlands. Today however they were to find out that Malaysia still has many more serious climbs to punish them. The climb to Fraser's Gap is rated as a first category climb, and was the first true mountain of this year's tour. It was to prove something of a shocker, and could have major implications on the final general classification.
Weaving its way up through a tropical jungle, the road climbs approximately 700 metres in 35 kilometres. This may not sound tough but when you're facing searing temperatures and stifling humidity it becomes a whole different ball game. As the riders left the midday heat of Tapah behind, the neutralised flag raising was greeted with a now familiar early attack from the Japanese rider Kaji Fukushima. With a long hot day ahead this may well have seemed like a suicide move. Even so as an early hot spot sprint was dangling like a proverbial carrot ahead of the field he was duly chased down, with the previous days stage winner Enrico Degano taking the early honours. This did not deter the Japanese rider who straight away was back on the attack. With the main field deciding not to take chances, he forged ahead by over ten minutes. This lead was, against all odds, going to be enough to take him over the summit of the race's only first category climb in first position. And with just 40 kilometres of fast rolling and descending to go before the finish in Bentong, there was the vague possibility of him defying the mockery and long odds to hold out to gain an outrageous and admirable stage win. Those riders in the know, and in the hunt for overall honours, had different ideas, and the chasing peloton was put under extreme pressure. Early on in the climb a group of 15 went clear, and it seemed as though this was going to be the end of the sprinter Hunter's reign supreme in the race.
No sooner had the group opened a decent gap than the race radio announced that the swift finishing South African, sporting the maillot jaune had attacked the peloton, and was closing in on the breakaway group, and this on a first category climb! It didn't take long for Hunter to bridge the gap, which must have shocked many, and dashed the hopes of those who supposed that today was elimination day for the Mapei rider. Hunter, a renowned sprinter, who has already taken a crushing time trial victory and a bunch sprint on this race has now shown that he can climb too, and with just one beast of a climb left between Bentong and the KL finish, could he take the overall honours in a race previously dominated by climbers? The situation now on GC is that he has a margin of 1.39 over Columbian Hernan Dario Munoz, with his Mapei teammate Luca Scinto (former TDL winner) level pegging on time in third spot. There is indeed an outside chance that Hunter may pull this one off. On the climb Tafi was stirring things up in the peloton, but to little avail; the lead group of 16 riders, containing most of the serious overall contenders, was on full throttle. Fukushima had been reeled in, and the gap to the peloton was up to two minutes. The run in to Bentong was controlled well by the South Africans David George and Daniel Spence, bringing the South African total to three in the leading group.
Ino the final kilometre and the South Africans seemed to have it all in hand, and the yellow jersey of Hunter hit the head of the peloton and struck out for victory. As the line approached, Italian sprinter Moreno Di Biase of the Mobilvetta team levelled with Hunter, pushing the decision to a photo finish, which he defiantly took from Hunter. The main peloton followed home just over two minutes behind with the "gladiator" Tafi leading the charge home. Stage five is a 129 kilometre leg from Baangi to Melaka. With just one early third category climb along the way this stage is likely to end in either another bunch finish, or maybe even a small breakaway group. Either way, rest assured that Mapei will be working hard to contain things and to notch up yet another stage win, this time maybe for Tafi?
