Mapei-Quick Step in a happy moodHunter keeps both the team and individual status intactBy Tommy Campbell in Ipoh
The leader board of the Telekom Malaysia Le Tour de Langkawi after day three has a familiar look about it, yet again. In pole position after day three of the stage from Lumut to Ipoh is the 24 year old Robert Hunter, the South African representing Mapei-Quick Step who still has a 55 second advantage on Eric Wohlberg of Canada, with the Russian Artour Babaitsev from Team Nürnberger a further second in arrears. Today's stage over 129.60 km was run at incredibly fast average speed of 48.99 km/h, despite the intense heat, which has been a factor of the event since the race started last Friday in Putrajaya. Evidently the competitors are coping well with only one non-starter yesterday from the original start sheet of 151. Showing the way on a relatively flat stage with two King of the Mountains primes was the 25-year old Enrico Degano, the Italian representing Ceramiche Panaria. This was Enrico's fifth stage win in three years, having won two last year and two the previous year. Today's win was a combination of dedicated work from his team and in particular the Australian Nathan O'Neill, who closed down a five man group which had the finish line in sight only to be foiled by the Ceramiche train who were on intent on Enrico getting the verdict. Enrico placed himself perfectly going into the roundabout which led onto the broad and straight 500 metre finishing stretch in Ipoh, and his delight was enhanced by having his Ceramiche Panaria teammate Graeme Brown (Australia) close behind him in second place - with a heaving pack of 131 riders, all credited with the same finishing time of 2 hr 38 min 44 sec, hard on their heels. The field had come together after a breakaway group was reeled in over the closing stages. Enrico couldn't have been happier with the way things went: "We seemed to have it set up yesterday then things went wrong and the Mapei boys got the better of us. But this time the team worked perfectly and paced me into just the right position to take the win. I'd been worried at one time that the break would stay clear but we timed everything just right." Overall race leader Robert Hunter, the South African riding with Italy's popular Mapei-Quick Step team came home safe though, finishing a creditable fourth, just behind Mario Traversoni (Mobilvetta Design). "I'm content with the way I rode. I felt just as strong as I did yesterday, when I took the stage, but things did not pan out right for me at the finish." In the early passage of the stage, there was a constant shuffling of competitors who were intent on taking matters into their own hands by going forward to gain time on the main peloton. It was at the first KOM that the first significant break of the day started to form, because on the descent the riders were on a comparatively narrow road with a number of sharp (out of sight) corners. These afforded the breakaways to move ahead of the peloton, which up to that junction was in no mood to allow forward moves.
Hopes had been high in the Mapei camp that their superhero Andrea Tafi, Malaysia's favourite Italian cyclist, would take the stage after his second place on stage two. He was in the thick of the action all day, driving the pace along and helping to cause the splits that at mid-race saw the peloton splintered into four smaller groups, with last year's winner Paolo Lanfranchi (Alexia), still recovering from an arm injury sustained the day before the race started, suffered at the back. Things looked especially good for Tafi towards the end when he proved the powerhouse in an original 14 strong group that managed to open a gap over the peloton as the kilometres started counting down. "Everyone was working well together and we got the lead up to over a minute," said Tafi at the finish, "Then as the bunch closed down on us, our group slowly whittled down to five." That quintet comprised Italy's Alberto Elli (Alexia); Denmark's Lennie Kristensen (Team fakta), and Rodney Green (South Africa), plus Tafi. "Our little group lost its cohesion because eventually there were just three of us forcing the pace with the other two just tapping along," said Tafi. That proved fatal and the junction was made on the outskirts of Ipoh, within sight of the one-kilometre to go marker, but Tafi managed to stay towards the front and finished a creditable seventh. With all the big names finishing together, the overall standings remained virtually as they were yesterday. Hunter remains optimistic: "From what I'm told, Fraser Hill, which we tackle tomorrow on the way to Bentong is a long steady climb, nowhere near as tough as Genting. I expect there will be a fairly sizeable group staying together up that one and I shouldn't have too much trouble staying with them. After that, well, we'll have to wait and see." Top Asian rider Arnel Quirimit, Philippines, confessed to feeling very tired today: "The race was extremely fast. The presence of the top European pros in the Tour de Langkawi always ensures that." With the individual and the points jerseys already accounted for, today saw the mountains competition being introduced with two category four climbs after 66 and 83 kilometres. In a clear lead in this section now is Hans de Meester, the Belgian who competes for the Palmans Collstrop outfit. Before he left from his home close to Gent for Le Tour, Hans promised his son Luca that he would bring back a jersey for him, so for now, he has fulfilled his part of the bargain and on current form, he could continue in the polka dot jersey after tomorrow's stage which finishes in Bentong. One man was missing from the start - Belgium's Kevin Van Impe, who was already on the plane home after having broken a bone in his arm in yesterday's stage. And by the end of the day, four more were out of the race, one being disqualified for a racing irregularity, and three more being eliminated for finishing outside the time limit.
