Stage 6 - February 6: Muar - Johor Bahru, 172.0kmResults Next stage Previous Stage Robert Hunter still ahead, but kudos goes to Graeme BrownBy Tommy Campbell in Maur-Johur Bahru
As anticipated there was no change to the overall standings after the sixth stage of Telekom Malaysia Le Tour de Langkawi today after the cyclists crossed the finishing line in Johor Bahru. The leader's jersey stays firmly on the back of the South African Robert Hunter (Mapei-Quick Step), with an additional gain of six seconds on his closest pursuers, Hernan Dario Munoz from Colombia-Selle Italia and Mickaël Pichon (Bonjour) from France. Each day there are bonuses for the intermediate sprints along the route of 3/2/1 seconds, and on the finishing line 10/6/4 seconds for the first three. So to date Robert has had three wins and two seconds that have contributed to his position of race leader.
Hunter was again in the thick of things as he contested an action-packed sprint which saw a number of the established stars of the Mobilvetta Design team crash in the last kilometre. In the end stage victory went to the Australian Graeme Brown of the Ceramiche Panaria Fiordo team who have been regular supporters of this race since 1996. They started their love affair with the race in '98, and over the years have had a number of memorable victories, such as when neo-pro Brown notched his first success in the paid ranks. At the stage start in Muar there was a general anticipation that the stage would be hard because of a cross wind, but miraculously for the riders this abated as soon as they started to race. Again as in previous days, the pace was fairly brisk (average speed to date is 44.76 km/h) with speeds approaching 60 km/h if there was a cause to bring potential escapees back to the main peloton. The first action on the 172 km stage was by members of the Credit Agricole outfit after just two kilometres. This was nullified quickly by a sudden acceleration from the 141-strong peloton. Virtually for the next 118 km, there were constant excursions from the pack to gain time, but in the end they all failed because of the marshalling of the peloton, in particular by Hunter's Mapei-Quick Step team. Even the first two sprints that were hotly contested failed to see a break established.
It was at the third sprint of the day that the race swung into action when Benoît Poilvet (Credit Agricole), Andy Flickinger (Ag2r Prevoyance), Frederic Amorison (Lotto-Adecco) and Moreno Di Biase (Mobilvetta Design) made good an escape which saw them go out to 1 minute 48 seconds before Mapei started to chase with 50 km to go. This was the maximum lead they had on the bunch and as each of the principal teams in the event contributed to the chase, the break was over with nine kilometres to go, with Flickinger and Di Base dangling in front for a couple more kilometres. With everything back in one big bunch it was time for the teams to set themselves up for the sprint. Spread from gutter to gutter, and riding shoulder to shoulder at near flat out speed, riders pushed and shoved their way into position with first one team then another getting the best 'train' going.
"It was very hairy in those lost few kilometres," said stage winner Graeme Brown, "Everyone was fighting to be in the right place. I had to force my way through. I got on my teammate Enrico Degano's wheel with 600 metres to go and he gave me a perfect lead-out." It was a fine "thank you" for the way in which Brown had paced Degano to a record fifth Tour de Langkawi stage victory into Ipoh, just three days ago. "Thanks to Degano, I managed to get by Robbie Hunter. He was not firing at 100 per cent because he was trying to set up a win for Tafi." Hunter commented: "It was a really fast first 100 km. We took our time to bring back the break, keeping it steady. During the last 200 metres I was trying to lead out Andrea but somehow he got stuck behind in the 'traffic'. I thought it was Tafi on my wheel and looked round for him to come past only to find it was Brown who was there. He deserved to win - he worked hard for it and placed himself perfectly." Hunter might well have made it his fourth stage win in this year's race had he not been trying instead to set up the win for his popular Mapei-Quick Step teammate Andrea Tafi of Italy. Hunter lost impetus looking round in the closing metres - expecting Tafi to come off his wheel and snatch the victory, but Tafi was not close enough and ended up in fourth place.
There were spills as well as thrills in the hectic sprint. A sharp corner off the corniche with less than 200 metres to go saw some touched wheels, resulting in four riders down, then another crash followed with just a few metres to go, though it had no influence on the result. Andrea Tafi still continues in the points jersey, with Japan's Koji Fukushima continuing in the polka dot jersey and Tonton Susanto as the leader of the Asian classification. Tonton is from Indonesia. As expected Mapei-Quick Step are ahead in the team classification. It will interesting to see how the event pans out tomorrow when the cyclists face into the longest stage of the ten day event. Photography
