In a nice play on words, Belgian Jurgen Van Den Broeck* has won the World Junior Men's Time Trial Championships by the seat of his pants. In a very closely contested affair, Van den Broeck beat Ukrainian Oleksandr Kvachuk by 0.44 seconds, and Dutchman Niels Scheuneman by 0.78. Last year he finished 13th in this same event, but has improved his time trialing skills over the past year to become one of the more consistent riders on the junior circuit.

Although GP des Nations winner Jurgen Van Den Broeck started last, he was not considered the outright favourite before the event. Others such as Finnish star Jukka Vastaranta, far and away the best junior rider all season, or Brit Keiran Page, were expected to challenge for the gold.

It was not to be as Ukrainian Oleksandr Kvachuk smashed all the previous best times to come in with 27:28.74, with 20 riders still to come. Kvachuk won the Giro della Lunigiana and Giro Della Basilicata in September, and was definitely a rider in form.

But today he had it right - almost. When the last rider, Jurgen Van Den Broeck, went through 4.5 kilometres in fourth place, 8 seconds slower than Kvachuk, the predictions started to be made about a Ukrainian victory. Van Den Broeck quickly found his rhythm on the lumpy parcours, and had reversed the deficit at 13 kilometres. Over the final 6.2 kilometres, the Belgian lost time to the Ukrainian, but saved just enough to take the gold.

*In Dutch, Broek = Trousers. Broeck is an old fashioned Dutch word (circa 1600) for broek, although it can also mean swamp.
