Stage 5 - March 5: Thredbo - Khancoban, 77.3 km

Another new stage of the race with the Alpine Way sealed for the very first time and opened just several weeks ago.

The race start will be difficult alone with the riders climbing to the highest point at Dead Horse Gap, just seven kilometres after the race start, reaching the pinnacle at 1582 metres.

The riders will then descend the steep mountain for virtually 10 kilometres to around 300 metres before enjoying some undulations. At the 51 kilometre the race really begins with a climb up Scamell's Ridge to 1020 metres before once again descending into Khancoban, which is at 400 metres.

It will be a fast ride for the majority of the race and a lone rider over Scamell could steal the stage victory.

It is the first occasion that Khancoban has witnessed a race finish, and it should be a great experience for all concerned. The riders, officials and media crews will at least enjoy the first one stage day of the race.
