Stage 2 - March 3: Cooma - Jindabyne, 61.1 km

Millward makes the double

As the skies cleared to brilliant blue for stage two, the riders took things a little steadier, with the outcome that a large group arrived in Jindabyne to to contest the finish. The downhill sprint was perfectly suited to Anna Millward (Saturn), who comfortably beat home Sara Carrigan (AIS) and Alfa Lum's Mari Holden. With the 20 second time bonus, Millward increased her lead in the general classification, but will have work to do tomorrow up to Thredbo.

The 61 kilometre journey from Cooma to Jindabyne was expected to be quite calm, given the stages to come. The peloton (minus Australian MTB champion Mary Grigson, who had pulled out after her crash in stage 1) rolled at 30 km/h for the first 20 kilometres, before the gradually picking up the pace for the sprint in Berridale.

Rochelle Gilmore took the points on offer from Kiwi Sarah Ulmer (Autotrader.com) and Naomi Williams (Jayco-VIS). Shortly afterwards there was a crash at the bottom of the day's only climb which took out several riders and caused a split in the bunch.

Showing some form at the top was World Road Champion, Zinaida Stahurskaia (GAS), who was pipped by Mirjam Melchers (Acca Due O) for the points, with teammate Priska Doppmann taking third.

After this it was essentially all downhill for the final 20 kilometres to the finish by Lake Jindabyne. This was perfect for Anna Millward, who knew she had her sprinting legs on, and she sped through to win the stage at over 70 km/h. Again she beat an AIS rider - Sara Carrigan, with Alfa Lum's Mari Holden taking third.

"It's the first day of the tour," said Millward scarcely three and a half hours after winning her first stage. "No-one really wants to let gaps go so it's easy to keep it together, and I always enjoy a sprint finish!"

"I think everyone's kind of cautious, so the tempo up the climb wasn't too fierce. I just sat in, followed wheels and saved myself."

Tomorrow is another split day, with the riders having a 35 kilometre stage up to Thredbo in the morning, followed by a 35 kilometre circuit race in the afternoon. The latter contains a steep climb each lap, and will certainly test Millward's strength, although she certainly looked comfortable today.
