92nd Milan - San RemoItaly, March 24, 20012000 Results Start list Past winners PreviewIn its 94 year history, the Milan - San Remo classic has only been interrupted three times, during the first and second World Wars. It is commonly nicknamed "La Primavera", which means "The Spring" in Italian, and marks the opening of the Spring Classics which are the biggest races the cycling calendar in April. It is also the first round of the UCI World Cup, and has often set the scene for the prized year-long competition. For the past two years, the winners of Milan - San Remo have gone on to win the overall World Cup. It will be no different this year, as Telekom's Erik Zabel has his sights set on another World Cup jersey. He is certainly one of the favourites to win the 92nd edition of this race that is so dear to the hearts of the Italians, but the pressure on him will be almost as great as in 1999, when Andrei Tchmil prevented him from winning three in a row. Amongst the Italians, Zabel's competitors will include Michele Bartoli (Mapei), winner of Het Volk and looking in threatening form once again. Bartoli scared a few people last year when he attacked on the Cipressa, effectively riding with one leg! Now that his knee injury is significantly improved, the peloton may not be able to bring him back. Another rider in Bartoli's style is Davide Rebellin (Liquigas). The winner of the Tour de Mediterranean and Tirreno Adriatico has enjoyed the best form - and luck - in several years, and he is another threat if he can get away in a small group. Cantina Tollo's Danilo di Luca can be considered as one of the favourites, as he has been seen riding out the front in many races, picking up the mountains jersey in Tirreno-Adriatico. The "Attacker from Abruzzo" will have to hold his aggression in check though for most of the 287 kilometres if he stands a chance of staying away. Dutchman Michael Boogerd (Rabobank) is also having an excellent early season, but he will not be on the start line for his team. " I am going home on Wednesday. I promised my girlfriend." Rabobank will be most probably working for Marcus Zberg, the Swiss sprinter who was a stage winner in Tirreno-Adriatico. Of the sprinters, Saeco Macchine per Caffe are looking for a magical win from Mario Cipollini (winner of the Giro del Siracusa a couple of weeks ago), or possibly Mirko Celestino, Fabio Sacchi or Biagio Conte. "Supermario" is perhaps the best credentialled rider with the speed to beat Zabel however. Domo-Farm Frites are going to be relying on their World Champion Romans Vainsteins to take the flowers at MSR, with leadout man Fred Rodriguez a key figure. Domo have lost Axel Merckx after he crashed out of Paris-Nice, but Vainsteins is back to his winning ways after Tirreno-Adriatico. Speaking of crashing out - Zbigniew Spruch (Lampre-Daikin) is a big question mark to start in MSR on Saturday. The Polish sprinter who was third in 1999, crashed in Sunday's warm up session for the time trial stage of the Tirreno Adriatico. He is suffering from burns and bruises over the complete right side of his body and will be forced to take a rest for a few painful days. It is likely that 25 year old Raivis Belohvosciks (Latvia), will replace him. Others with outside chances include Mercury-Viatel's Peter van Petegem, who led Paris-Nice for several stages before losing it on the Col d'Eze time trial. Then there is Mapei's Paolo Bettini, who could act as a foil for Bartoli in more ways than one. Cantina Tollo's Gabriele Colombo (MSR winner in 1996) managed second in Tirreno-Adriatico, and could again be a threat in 2001.
