Tour of Wellington - 2.5New Zealand, January 3-7, 2001Main Page Results Previous stage Stage 5 - January 7: Wellington - Hawkins Hill, 69 kmVesty wins, Jenner conquersBy Jim Robinson Credit Agricole rider Chris Jenner grabbed the first UCI points of 2001 today, winning the five day Tour of Wellington in convincing style. In baking heat, Jenner finished the 12km, 500 vertical metre climb of Hawkins Hill in third place behind Jeremy Yates and stage winner Brendon Vesty, but the time gaps were small enough to keep him in yellow. Hawkins Hill overlooks Wellington city, featuring a wind turbine reputed to be the world's most productive for its size - Wellington is that windy. But today there wasn't a breath of a breeze as the thermometer soared to 30 degrees. The beaches were packed with holiday-makers, and the tar on the road turned to treacle. The 70 kilometre stage took the 65 surviving tour riders around the scenic harbour city coastline before the 12 kilometre grind to the Hawkins Hill summit. As soon as the road veered upwards, the hammer went down and the field exploded. The climb is extremely uneven, starting with 3 kilometres of 5 per cent, before pitching upwards at 15 per cent. It's difficult to get a good rhythm going, with the upper slopes varying from short sharp descents to an 800 metre long stretch of 20 per cent. "It's not a climb I want to do again in a hurry," quipped Jenner. The tour's scheduled final stage criterium was removed from the GC classification, after the inner-city location proved too difficult to keep clear of wandering sun-seekers.
