Not this time. For the fourth consecutive day, the capital turned on the heat - and the 66 remaining riders in the Tour of Wellington did the same. As expected, the demanding seven-lap stage four, which included the 100 vertical metre climb of Wallaceville hill each lap, blasted the field to pieces. At the end of the 140 kilometres, Chris Jenner outsprinted Graeme Miller for the win, regaining the yellow jersey by 42 seconds from Miller, with Jeremy Yates third and yesterday's leader Brendon Vesty fourth. Jenner, Miller, Junior world champion Yates and Australian Tim Bartholomew broke clear from the much-depleted bunch with a couple of laps to go, and never looked like being caught. Behind them the field was strewn into small groups and solo riders as much as a lap down. The race was fast from the outset, with a break going clear just a few kilometres from the start, and staying away for several laps. As yesterday, the temperatures climbed into the high twenties, and much of the Wallaceville climb was lined with team support passing out bottles. With tomorrow morning's stage 5 featuring the painful climb up Hawkins hill, Jenner now looks a good bet for the overall - but there's little question Miller and the rest of the Avantis will be on the attack from early on to cause an upset. Tomorrow afternoon's criterium finishes the tour.
