The third last round of the 2001 World Cup will be held in Switzerland this Sunday - the 88th edition of the Meisterschaft von Zürich (Championship of Zurich). On a challenging 6 x 41.4 km (248.4 km) parcours, the real protagonists for this year's World Cup will do battle on the Pfannenstiel and Forch, the two main climbs each lap. In total, there is 3426 metres of climbing (571 m per lap), more than enough for last weekend's HEW World Cup winner Erik Zabel, who will not participate in this event.

That opens things up for Zabel's teammate Jan Ullrich to go for the victory, and he has made no secret of the fact that he will try. Ullrich has been in good form since the Tour, finishing second in Coppa Agostoni mid-week behind Francesco Casagrande. Last year in Zurich, Ullrich finished ahead of Casagrande, but behind Swiss winner Laurent Dufaux (Saeco), who will wear number one as the defending champ.

Dufaux has a couple of strong teammates in Mirko Celestino (winner of Tre Valli Varesine) and Fabio Sacchi, but will he be able to handle the challenge like he did last year? Both Lance Armstrong (USPS) and Davide Rebellin will also be in Zurich, and while Rebellin's form is solid, Armstrong seems to be on the downward slope of his season racing in Burgos, and may lose his number one UCI ranking to Rebellin on Sunday. Of course, the Texan may simply be saving his legs, as this race is not to be treated lightly.

World Cup leader Erik Dekker (Rabobank) had a fantastic race last week in Germany, and certainly has the form to win on Sunday. All he needs is a decent placing, and the World Cup is his for 2001. He'll have good support from the brothers Zberg, Michael Boogerd and Maarten Den Bakker.

Further down the start list is Lotto-Adecco's Serge Baguet, who is having a consistent season so far, and starting to realise his talent as a cyclist. The lightly built Letterhoutemenaar finished 5th in San Sebastian, and won the Druivenkoers in Overijse midweek He can certainly handle the short steep climbs and may be in the mix at the end.

Mapei-Quick Step has brought a strong team, with Bartoli and Bettini leading the charge, along with Garzelli, Noe and Freire. The latter finished 6th in this race last year, and although he is still in comeback mode, he could surprise. Mercatone Uno's big chance is Igor Astarloa, who is generally up with the best riders.

Clasica San Sebastian winner Laurent Jalabert (CSC-Tiscali) is ready to go again, and his teammate Jakob Piil should also perform well on this course.

All told, it is an excellent quality field and this year's Meisterschaft von Zürich should produce a top class winner.
