The 2000 World Cup moves to Switzerland for the third last round of this season, the Meisterschaft von Zürich (Championship of Zürich). It is the 87th edition of this race and a total of 20 eight man teams are expected, one of the strongest fields ever. 18 first division teams as well as two wild card entries, Phonak Hearing Systems and Post Swiss. The only division one teams not taking the start are Banesto, Kelme, and Vitalicio-Seguros, with US Postal a late addition.

This means that the top 10 riders in the World Cup will be on the start line (except for the injured Johan Museeuw): Erik Zabel, Andrei Tchmil, Peter Van Petegem, Romans Vainsteins, Paolo Bettini, Fabio Baldato, Oscar Freire, Zbigniew Spruch, and Gabriele Missaglia. In addition, top riders such as Francesco Casagrande, Jan Ullrich, Davide Rebellin, Michele Bartoli, Richard Virenque, Oscar Camenzind, and Markus Zberg will line up for this challenging event. One other interesting re-entry in the majors: Swedish Michael Andersson building up for the Olympic TT by joining Mercatone Uno.

It is markedly different from the last two rounds, HEW Cyclassics and Clasica San Sebastian, with a hilly parcours involving 3,420m of climbing. A total of 6x41.4 km laps adding up to 248 kilometres have to be tackled on steep hilly and narrow roads around Zürich, with the climbs of the Pfannenstiel and Forch the main difficulties. Last year's event was voted by the UCI as one of the best World Cups along with Milan-San Remo, and with a big sponsorship from Siemens and APG this year (and for the next three), the 2000 edition should be equally as good.

1999 winner, Gregorz Gwiazdowski (then riding for Cofidis, now for FdJ) will be there to defend his title on Sunday, but he will be a rank outsider this year. Last year's effort was brave and unexpected after he attacked his breakaway companions, Laurent Brochard and Jörg Jaksche on the last descent and amazingly held off the peloton after over 200 kilometres away. Coming across the line, he couldn't even raise his arms and was absolutely exhausted. A repeat this year is unlikely, given the field, but another "unknown" may try his hand.

There is no question that the course suits power climbers like Tchmil, Casagrande, Bettini, Bartoli, and Rebellin. Definitely not Erik Zabel, who will likely lose some his 124 point buffer to Andrei Tchmil. Could the perennially consistent Belgian pull off the incredible, and beat Zabel in a late charge for the World Cup? This race will be critical if that is to be the case.
