Dufaux gets another at home

Swiss rider, Laurent Dufaux (Saeco-Valli&Valli) became the winner of the 87th edition of the Meisterschaft von Zürich after he surprised an in-form Jan Ullrich and Francesco Casagrande in a three up sprint. Meanwhile, Erik Zabel kept his lead in the World Cup after a non-performance by Andrei Tchmil who finished in the same group as Zabel, more than 17 minutes behind the victor.
There were also strong performances from Davide Rebellin and Lance Armstrong, fourth and fifth respectively, but could not hold on on the final climb at Pfannenstiel, and the leading trio put a minute into them over the final 15 kilometres. Considering US Postal were only a last minute entry, it wasn't bad going. Oscars Freire and Camenzind also put in good efforts to make the decisive eight man break, and finished a little further behind Armstrong and Rebellin.
The early part of the race saw an attack by Jorg Jascke (Telekom) and Dmitri Konyshev (Fassa Bortolo) after only 32 kilometres of the 248 kilometre race. A similar move worked last year but there were going to be no surprises this time, with the two being given little advantage. At the end of the first 41.4 kilometre lap, they had 1'11, being chased by Ekimov, Bourquenoud, Teteriuk, Zumsteg et Gianetti. They were eventually caught, and a new 19 man group formed, with including M. Zberg, Hamburger, Livingston, Tosatto, Merckx, Van der Wouwer, Barbero, Gianetti, Andersson, Jaksche, and Gontchar.
By the halfway point, this group had 2'20 on the bunch, but a strong chase from , Bartoli, Camenzind, Peron, Cassani, Dufaux, Hundertmatk, Ullrich, Missaglia and Bettini prompted a reaction from the rest of the rapidly diminishing peloton, and by the end of the fourth lap it was all over. 55 riders left, 82 kilometres to go.

Then came the decisive move: Armstrong, Ullrich, Francesco Casagrande, Freire, Rebellin, Camenzind, Dufaux and Kivilev rode away at kilometre 188, and the rest of the field could not match their pace. Bartoli, Zabel, Tchmil and Vainsteins all missed the move which was not unexpected given the hilly parcours. However, Bartoli, Cigana, Vainsteins, De Paoli, and Zarrabeita gave chase and were only 47 seconds behind the eight with one lap to go. The peloton was at 4'17 and going backwards.
Andrei Kivilev couldn't hold them up the last climb of the Pfannenstiel, and the remaining seven were subject to an expected attack by Francesco Casagrande, who was countered by Ullrich. They succeeded in dropping all Dufaux, with a small gap to Armstrong and Rebellin over the top. That was the race, as the remaining splinters of the break could only limit the damage on the run in to town.
In the final kilometre, Ullrich attempted an early surprise attack, but this did not come off and Dufaux was the one who benefited most. The Swiss rider took the first Swiss victory since 1981 when Beat Breu won the race, and it was a happy occasion for the Saeco rider who has not had the best of it during the Grand Tours this year. With this win he also silenced a few critics that said he should have been left off the Swiss Olympic team in favour of Pascal Richard.
"It's a wonderful day, I've waited a long time for this victory, I was able to stay on Ullrich's wheel in the final kilometre and it was a good thing, because from there I was able to pass him just before the finish,'' said the elated Dufaux at the end.
