Meisterschaft von Zürich, World Cup Round 8Switzerland, August 22, 1999 |
Report:The race started at 10.15 with 181 riders entered. The weather was fine and the temperature at around 18°c. After 20 kms, there had been two tentative attacks. The first from Cédric Fragnière (Swi), Lukas Zumsteg (Swi) and Marty Jemison (USA). The second came from another Swiss rider Josef Christen. But on both occasions the peloton reacted quickly and closed down the moves. At km 23, the riders had completed the first of 5 laps and 3 riders attacked from the peloton. Frutti (Lampre), Rolf Järmann (Post Swiss Team) and Julian Dean (US Postal). They were joined by 7 other riders - Germano Pierdomenico (Cantina Tollo), Christophe Moreau (Festina), Vicente Garcia Acosta (Banesto), Roberto Petito (Saeco), Gianluca Valoti (Polti), Miquel Van Kessel (TVM) and Francisco Cerezo (Vitalicio). At km 35, the 10 leaders had a narrow lead of 15 seconds on the peloton behind.By km 45, the 10 riders were caught but the attacks continued straight away. On the mountain at Pfannenstiel, Mirko Gualdi (Mobilvetta), David George (US Postal) and Emanuele Lupi (Vini Caldirola) tried their luck but it was in vain. Laurent Dufaux (Saeco) led the peloton over with Orlando Rodriguez (Banesto) and Kurt Van De Wouwer (Lotto) taking the minor placings. On the descent, Laurent Brochard (Festina) and Poland's Grzegorz Gwiazdowski (Cofidis) went off the front. By km 68, they were joined by Arturas Kasputis (Casino) and Jörg Jaksche (Telekom). As the riders passed the finish line for the second time they had 2.50 on the peloton and were riding strongly. But their lead grew quickly and by km 77 it was at 6.00. At that point, Dimitri Konyshev (Mercatone) abandoned. By the second ascent of the mountain the 4 leaders had a lead of 8..38. Behind a major crash delayed the progress of several riders. The Italian Marco Della Vedova (Lampre) attacked but was reabsorbed back into the peloton. Maarten Den Bakker (Rabobank), Romans Vainsteins (Vini Caldirola), Paolo Valoti (Mobilvetta), Udo Bölts (Telekom) and Fabian Jeker (Festina) tried to get away but failed. At km 120, at the half-way mark the four leaders had stabilised their gap at 8.15. They were working well together and seemed intent on staying away. Behind them the peloton was struggling to organise any chase. By km 140, the attackers added to their lead and the the third time up the mountain it had grown to 9.40. The alarm bells started ringing in the peloton. At km 157, Tchmil's team starting working along with the Mapei riders. In general, the peloton was now in full chase mode. By the end of the 4th lap, the lead was down to 6.18. Brochard attacked his breakaway companions on the 3rd climb of the mountain and went over in front of Jaksche and Kasputis. The average speed was at that moment 38.714 km/h. Average for the second lap was 41.906 km/h, the third lap, 39.523 km/h and the 4th lap it was 37.537 km/h. By km 175, Kasputis (Casino), who had worked hard in the front group, was dropped and was 1 minute behind the (now) 3 leaders - Brochard, Jaksche and Gwiazdowski. Behind was a group of counter-attackers - Danilo Di Luca (Cantina Tollo), Luca Scinto (Mapei), Mario Manzoni (Mobilvetta) Rolf Sörensen (Rabobank), Oscar Pozzi (Riso Scotti) and Mauro Zanetti (Vini Caldirola). They were 5.00 down on the leaders. Of note at this point was the abandonment of Salvatore Comesso at the end of lap 3 and the fall of Francesco Casagrande and Oscar Camenzind. At km 201, the riders started the last lap and the three leaders were 3.31 in front of a group of 8 riders. The 8 were the six noted above and Beat Zberg (Rabobank) and Marco Serpellini (Lampre). The peloton was at 4.55. 44 kms were left to ride. The peloton contained notables like Virenque, Tafi, Dufaux, Van Petegem, Museeuw, Vandenbroucke, and Zülle. The race was finally becoming interesting when a peloton with some of the big hitters in it caught the 8 counter-attackers. The chasing bunch now contained Andrei Tchmil (intent on defending his WC lead), Michael Boogerd, Laurent Dufaux, Sergio Barbero, Andrei Kivilev, Mikel Zarrabeitia and Paolo Bettini. They were at this stage 2.35 down on the leading 3 and closing. Soon after the peloton were at 0.20 to the Tchmil group. There was still over 20 kms to go. To eliminate hassles at the finish, the organisers are trialling a new system. All riders have a little red block with a sender attached to their front-axle. This makes it easier to determine the final classification at the finish. They are still backing up, however, with a traditional photo of the finish. The peloton were now moving fast and were closing the gap down quickly. 1.17 then soon after only 1.06. Tchmil and Dufaux were prominent in the chase. The lead was then only 0.46 seconds and the chase was nearly over. On the last climb of the 12 per cent Pfannenstiel Brochard was dropped about 2 kms from the top. There were only 2 left in the lead now - Grzegorz Gwiazdowski and Jörg Jaksche. km 226 and Dufaux's group was at 30 seconds. The police estimated that the crowd around the parcours was in excess of 100,000. Large. Brochard then fought back on the last 200 metres of the climb of the Pfannenstiel and lead his breakaway partners over the top (to win the 1000 Swiss Francs premie). Tchmil and Boogerd were at 30 seconds with Dufaux. Second over was Gwiazdowski then Jaksche. With 16 kms to go and one more climb and the gap was 23 seconds. On the first part of the climb of the Rutihof - it is 12 per cent for the first 70 metres - the 3 leaders had a lead of 18 seconds. Behind, danger man Davide Rebellin joined the Tchmil-Boogerd group who at stage were just 150 metres behind the leading trio. On the second part of the climb the group of 8 caught the 3 leaders, but Gwiazdowski attacked immediately and built a 15 second buffer. He descended at over 80 kms per hour. With 8 kms to go he increased this lead to 18 seconds. The Pole maintained the 18 second lead for the next 2 kms. And so he kept the lead as the Tchmil-Boogerd group failed to organise behind him. It was the first Polish GP victory. He won by 28 seconds from Sergio Barbero (who finished alone), then Tchmil, Bettini, Kivilev and Boogerd. The winner was too tired to even give a victory salute.
