Brief Preview:German Jan Ullrich will be up against a host of Italian riders on Sunday in the Grand Prix Suisse with will run between Basel and Zurich over 242.7 kms. It is round 8 of the 10 round World Cup for 1998.On the form he showed last Sunday in Hamburg where he came 9th, Ullrich will find this course to his liking and is a favourite to take the event. But the German will not have it all his own way. He faces a strong Italian presence led by the World Cup No. 1 Michele Bartoli and also the return to World Cup racing by the World UCI No. 1 Laurent Jalabert. Jalabert, however, pulled out of the last stage of the Tour of Burgos complaining of fatigue and it is not known if he still intends to race in Switzerland on Sunday. Last year, there were 30 riders who finished within seconds of each other. This encouraged the organisers of the race to remodel the course and they have now come up with 4 tough climbs in the last 70 kms of the race. Apart from Ullrich, the other favourites are Bartolu (6th last year), Italian Davide Rebellin, (first last year) and motivated by his great win in the Trois Vallées Varésines last Wednesday. Rebellin, seems to do well in Switzerland and he won a stage in the national tour there in June. He also has a strong Polti team to support him (Mirko Celestino, Fabrizio Guidi and Axel Merckx among others). The Italian teams have entered in force and the most serious contenders are Mapei-Bricobi (Frank Vandenbroucke, Giuseppe di Grande, Daniele Nardello and Andrea Tafi, the latter winning the Coppa Agostoni on Thursday). Being in Switzerland, the race also focuses on the Festina team and particularly the Swiss pair of Laurent Dufaux and Alex Zulle, who are still under a cloud following the doping scandal during the Tour de France. Why they are still riding is beyond me. But the other leading Swiss rider Pascal Richard (Casino), realises that he has crowd support and good form. Similarly, Roland Meier (Cofidis). There are 23 teams entered for the race. Spanish Division I teams Banesto and Kelme are not entered. The Division II team of Post Swiss is in the race and the Swiss Champion Niki Aebersold and Markus Zberg get chances to ride in top company. Brief Report:ONCE pulled out of the race after several members reported that they were suffering from food poisoning. Laurent Jalabert abandoned the Tour of Burgos on Friday suffering from the complaint. The Swiss grand prix race is the eighth round of the World Cup. Switzerland's Lukas Zumsteg, Italy's Fabrizio Bontempi and France's Pascal Derame caused the early excitement when they attacked early and were only caught some 40 kms from the finish. A new group formed and this move proved to be the winning attack. The GP Suisse came down to a photo finish as 9 riders (7 Italians, a Belgian and an American) sprinted for the victory on the track in Zurich. The photo went to World Cup leader Michele Bartoli from Franck Vandenbroucke. A break of 5 riders (Bartoli, Commesso, Julich, Gentili, and Rebellin), were joined just before the final climb of Anhöhe Hüttiker by two more Italians, Andrea Tafi and Paolo Bettini. Julich made the 18% climb look easy but on the descent the group of 7 came back together with 16 kms to go. There were some attacks which were of no consequence. In the last few kms, the 7 were joined by Franck Vandenbroucke and Dario Frigo. As they came on to the velodrome for 1.25 laps until the finish it was Bettini who led out the sprint with Bartoli on his wheel and Vandenbroucke at third wheel. Tafi then tried to pass Bartoli as Bettini let him pass. Just as they were lining up for the last 20 metres a motorcycle which was leading the rest of the peloton into the track came straight across the path of the sprinting 9. A very near miss indeed. On the line, the top two were too close to call. Basel - Zürich, 243 kms:1. Michele Bartoli (Ita) Asics-CGA 6.09.24 2. Franck Vandenbroucke (Bel) Mapei-Bricobi 3. Salvatore Commesso (Ita) Saeco 4.
