Paolo Valoti wins BernocchiTonetti takes Trittico Alessio's Paolo Valoti scored a surprise win in the Coppa Bernocchi, the final race of the Trittico Lombardo series. Valoti, who placed second in the Tre Valli Varesine, managed a successful attack in the last kilometre to hold off Dario Andriotto (Alexia) and Denis Lunghi (Colpack). The overall Trittico Lombardo classification was won by Gianluca Tonetti (Selle Italia), principally through his performance in yesterday's Coppa Agostoni. The 200 km race was held in Legano, near Milan, and was marked by a long solo escape from Slovenian Matjaz Batic who was away for 77 kilometres, reaching a maximum lead of 7'45. However, Jan Ullrich (Telekom) and Serguei Gontchar (Liquigas) helped to pull Batic back ready for the finale, although Ullrich later abandoned the race. With 20 kilometres left, the selection was made by a group of 14 riders, including Gontchar, Di Luca and Bortolami. At 7 kilometres to go, Paolo Valoti attacked and took Andriotto, Lunghi and Matveyev with him. He repeated the move with 1 kilometre left, and the other three could not follow him, and Valoti took the win. Valoti is from Bergamo and is a cousin of Gianluca Valoti (Alexia Alluminio). "I came close on Tuesday with the second position in Tre Valli, 9 seconds behind Celestino. But I wanted to win. I did not trust myself if Bortolami was still there, as it would have been too hard to beat him in the sprint." "The team has rallied around me, given me confidence, and I am satisfied that I can repay them with a success. Dedication? To my companions certainly, and then to my wife Loredana and my son Andrea." Gianluca Tonetti gained the overall Trittico Lombardo classification, as he started in all three races. He won a diamond worth ITL 12 million (US$5,600)
