Baltic double
"I had a terrible hunger crisis three kilometres from the finish, I
had no thought of winning", said Latvian Romans Vainsteins (Vini Caldirola)
after winning the Coppa Bernocchi, the third and final part of the Trittico
Regione Lombardia. Vainsteins fell exhausted to the ground after passing
the finish line ahead of escape partner Lithuanian Raimondas Rumsas
(Fassa Bortolo), 15 seconds ahead of a chasing group of twelve riders
with Telekom's Giovanni Lombardi first.
The Baltic duo got the gap on the final climb of the Morazzone where
Rumsas attacked and Vainsteins was the only one strong enough to follow.
Before that Secchiari (Saeco) and another Latvian rider Belohvosciks
(Lampre) had been on the attack most of the day. Their early breakway
companion, Mobilvetta's Evgenij Berzin (remember him?) lost contact
however when Fois (Colpack) and Serpellini (Lampre) caught the leaders.
Vainsteins also said after the race that he will leave Vini Caldirola after this season, not only on the money issue:
"I have several offers but I want to be on a team where I have the support needed to be a winner", he said and also pointed out that his two main goals for the season, the World Cup and the World Championships still were within reach.
