In a massive display of power and determination, 30 year old Ukranian time trial specialist Serhiy Hontchar (Liquigas-Pata) cranked his way to the Elite Men's World TT Championship today in Plouay, France. With race favorite Abraham Olano of Spain on a bad day at the office and expected challenger Laurent Jalabert of France ko'ed by gastroenteritis, Honchar seized the moment and took his first ever TT crown after silver in '97 and bronze in '98. "I'm really satisfied," Hontchar told cyclingnews.com in the post race interview. "After the silver and bronze, I've finally got my World Championship. "

Just behind the Italian-domiciled Ukranian was a surprising Michael Rich (Gerolsteiner) of Germany. Rich is a 29 year old from Waldkirch and was 4th in the GP des Nations TT last month in France. Rounding out the medals was Laszlo Bodrogi of Hungary, the 23 year old from Dampierre who won the ITT stage in last month's Tour De l'Avenir and held the lead in that race for several stages.

Weatherwise, the rain-filled banks of clouds blew through Plouay all day, alternating cold rain with bright sunlight and making each riders run from Rostrenen to Plouay an exciting experience. Early on, the fast time was established by Swiss rider Nuttli, at 58'59", but when Jens Voigt came through the arriveé over a half-minute quicker, things started to get serious.

Just behind Voigt, his fellow German Michael Rich was busy beating all the intermediate splits. When the blue and white clad Gerolsteiner man finished, he has bested Voigt by an incredible 1'49"! Rich had ridden from Rostrenen at an average 50.520km/hr, which looked more and more as the time to beat. American Tyler Hamilton was struggling; his long season had finally caught up with him, as was Abraham Olano, who looked like he was going backwards.

Laszlo Bodrogi had a good run at Rich for most of the TT, but in the end, only one man was in the hunt to beat the surprising German. Hungry Hontchar. Today, a man on a mission. But with 3.9 km to race at the last time check of Moulin de Cot-Cren, Hontchar was still just behind Rich.

Up the long final drag of Questenen plaine, where Holden and Longo had duked it out the day before, Hontchar pounded a huge gear. While it didn't look like he was making up time on Rich, as the Ukranian hit the last 500 meters, the crowd pounded the barriers in encouragement, seeing that Hontchar had taken back just enough to win his first TT title.

Was Hontchar a man with a plan today? Well, the new champion told cyclingnews in the post race interview that "I didn't know my splits; I never want to know them in the race. I go as hard as I can and what happens (in the race) happens. "

Indeed, as Doris Day once sang, "Que sera, sera." And Hontchar has his first Rainbow Jersey.
