The first rider has passed through the first time check at 12.4 kilometres: Slovakian Robert Nagy, who is rider number 42. He was a late entry. He will be followed by Kenyan David Kinja.

All the riders start at 2 minute intervals today, and the finish is expected at around 16:30 CET.

15:00 CET

The quickest time now at the 12.4 kilometre point is from rider number 37, Ondrej Sosenka (Cze), who is also a handy rider in the individual and team pursuit events on the velodrome. He has set the standard at 15:22.54 (48.4 km/h).

15:23 CET

The weather is pretty much the same as it has been: puffy clouds blowing in from the Atlantic, with occasional bursts of rain. The riders have the wind from their right shoulder. Olano said in L'Equipe today that this would favour the pure time trialists.

Rik Verbrugghe (Bel) is now on the course. There are just 13 riders to start, and the quickest rider so far is Sosenka, who has a 46:12.98 after 37.1 km

15:30 CET

Robert Nagy (Svk), the first rider to start finishes in 1.03.12.33 (45.18 km/h). There are rain showers in Rostrenen where the riders are starting, and now Christophe Moreau (Fra) is on the course.

15:50 CET

Sosenka (Cze) goes under the hour, to record 59.41.59, putting him ahead of South African Robert Hunter by 14 seconds.

Note: there was a change in the start list: Number 12 is now Sergiy Matveyev (Ukr), while number 16 is Jens Voigt (Ger). Rider number 2, Laurent Jalabert did not start.

16:00 CET

All riders are out on the course, and the wind is blowing. More on Jalabert: he had gastroenteritis and forfeited his start.

The fastest times now are being posted by Germany's Michael Rich - he is quicker than several other fancied riders at the 23 km point, including Chris Boardman, Christophe Moreau and Tyler Hamilton.

16:06 CET

Serhiy Honchar (Ukr) has set the quickest at 12.4 km - 14.34.70, surpassing Rich. Olano is 7th fastest at that point, while Hungarian Bodrogi is third quickest.

Fastest overall finisher is still Ondrej Sosenka.

16:15 CET

At the 23 kilometre check, Rich is still faster than Honchar by 6 seconds. The Ukranian was seen yelling at his team car. Could this be an unexpected win for the Germans? Olano passed through in 28.34.01, nearly a minute slower than Rich and in 5th place.

Quickest on the leaderboard is now Italian Marco Pinotti, with a 58.37.52.

16:21 CET

Michael Rich sets the standard: 56.31.95 (50.52 km/h). It looks as though Honchar and Bodrogi are the only ones capable of catching him, but he looked bery good and had good conditions for his ride.

16:32 CET

The only rider who can win now is Honchar, after Bodrogi crossed the line 14 seconds slower than Rich. Honchar has just come out of the rain and has not far to go. At the fourth time check, he was within 3 seconds of Rich with 5 kms to go!

Currently, Jens Voigt is holding down third place.

16:39 CET

Sehiy Honchar is the new World Champion in 56.21.75 (50.672 km/h)! He made up big time on the last hill in a huge gear. Bodrogi gets the bronze medal, while Chris Boardman is fourth in 57.38.08. Olano takes fifth in 57.50.13.
