Stage 1 - August 26: Málaga-Málaga ITT, 13.3 km
Zülle shines, Ullrich falters

Welcome to Spain and Malaga, the city that hosts the first stage of this year's Tour of Spain, or Vuelta a Espańa as most of us know it. The three week tour is starting a little earlier this year because of the Olympics. In fact, the peloton will still be racing in Spain when the track competition starts in Sydney, but as the Olympic Time trial and road race are contested later, a lot of riders use this Grand Tour as a preparation.
The temperature in Malaga today is 35 degrees, and Andrei Teteriouk has just taken over the lead from Vitalicio Seguros' Alvaro Gonzalez de Galdeano The big favourites for the general classification as well as the first stage are still to head off. A novel idea this year is to make a few riders wear a pulse monitor that will let the public TV viewers see the riders heart rate on their screen. Who would be better suited for this than our big hearted friend Andrea Tafi? He measures 188 bpm right now. If you are among those who would like to see what Jan Ullrich's pulse is like, don't count on it. None of the top riders would wear the monitor during a stage they would like to win. It would give other teams and especially other team managers an unnecessary advantage.
World Champion Oscar Freire rides off the podium, but not in his rainbow jersey since this isn't the discipline he won at the World's last year. Right behind him follows a fella from the good old days, Gabriele Colombo. Another hero from the past is present as a street name. The riders pass along the Calle Miguel Indurain for part of the race.
Czech rider Jan Hruska is on his way to finish, and he comes in with a good time, 11 seconds ahead of his teammate Pena, who punished the time of Teteriouk just minutes ago. Jose Maria Jimenez, El Chabacano is the next rider to roll of the podium. He is always an interesting rider to watch when the road goes up, and believe me, in this Vuelta it does. However, time trials like this will keep him from winning it. Behind him comes another famous face, Mario Cipollini. He looks pale and a bit thinner than usual, but of the 30 stitches in his face, little can be seen.

The short stage has one climb, the Alto de Rodeo, and although it isn't very long or steep it will prevent most of the sprinters to wear the leaders jersey because of bonus seconds during the next days. Abraham Olano appears on the podium, with a new hair cut, and according to Spanish press, bad morale. Olano does not like the short stages in this year's Vuelta, odd as it may seem. However, it's the riders and not the route that is important in a good race, and short stages at least provide a lot more recovery that 260 kilometer days.
Behind Olano follows Virenque, and the GP Zürich winner, Dufaux, and then comes Ullrich, wearing his World Champion jersey. He is not allowed to wear the leader's jersey even though he won this race last year, because this stage at over 12 kilometres is counted as a real stage and not a prologue.
Alex Zülle has the fastest time over the Alto de Rodeo, and meanwhile, Olano has finished with the best time of the day. Maybe there is nothing wrong with his morale after all. Tonkov, who started as the captain of Mapei has failed to perform again, and more amazingly, so has Jan Ullrich. Someone who keeps his pace is Alex Zülle, and it looks like it is going to be a narrow race between him and Olano. Zülle pushes it and manages to cross the line 1.7 seconds ahead of the Spaniard. Zülle is in great form, and because it is him, that might be of concern. If he peaks in the first week, I doubt that he will last the whole race, but we'll have to wait and see.
