Stage 1 - August 26: Málaga-Málaga ITT, 13.3 km

Following on from the Tour de France this year, the first stage of La Vuelta will not be a prologue (which are typically less than 9 kilometres), but rather a time trial of 13.3 kilometres in Málaga. The parcours is flat, save for one 1.5 kilometre climb of 110 metres near the beginning of the race. As with the Tour, this stagecould well set the tone for the first week, with sprinters finding it tough to gain the golden leader's jersey.

Málaga is situated on the Spanish coast in the south eastern part of Andalusia, and has a history of trading with the Americas in the 18th century. It is a cosmopolitan city, with roots in Syrian, Italian and Jewish culture, and subsequent influence from the English, German and French. Last century, it was a major centre for the iron and steel industry, before it fell into decline earlier in the 20th century. In the 1960's, tourism helped the city back to a prosperous path and is its main source of wealth today.
