Tour of Tasmania - 2.5Australia, August 30 - September 3, 2000Main Page Results Previous stage Stage 3 - September 1: Swansea - Hobart, 143 kmDanny Clark wins it for the vetsAustralian and native Tasmanian, Danny Clark put an end to the run of German/Russian stage wins in the Tour of Tasmania by winning the third stage from Swansea to Hobart. At 49, Clark is still in the excellent form that saw him dominate six day track racing for the previous two decades. The stage was 143 kilometres long, and contained few hills, therefore perfectly suited to one of Clark's abilities. However, he had to outride the best track riders from Russia, New Zealand and Germany, not to mention some of Australia's best roadies. He did so by making the first and only serious break of the day - right from the gun as he went with Guido Fulst, Vladimir Karpets, Rory Sutherland, David McPartland, Daniel Becke, Nathan Clarke and Glenn Chadwick. The peloton did not chase, and the gap went out to four and a half minutes at one stage. Becke tried an attack with 17 kilometres to go, but was joined by Clark a short while later. The peloton were closing, but had run out of kilometres. Clark and Becke held their lead, with Clark taking an easier than expected stage win after Becke took a wrong turn near the end. However, the German admitted afterwards that he wouldn't have beat the Tasmanian legend anyway. A fitting result for a local and Australian hero.
