Tour of Tasmania - 2.5Australia, August 30 - September 3, 2000Main Page Results Previous stage Stage 2 - August 31: Launceston - St Helens, 164 kmTrack powerStage two was both longer and harder than Wednesday's 143 kilometre opener from Devonport to Launceston. In total, 164 kilometres had to be ridden from Launceston to St Helens with three tough climbs en route. Despite this, it was a markedly different finish to yesterday's 11 man show, as a decent sized bunch arrived in St Helens to contest the sprint. At the end of the day, Robert Tighello maintained his leader's jersey while German Olaf Pollack won the stage. An early attack consisting of Robert Boag, Brent Dawson, Matthew Conn, Peter Milostic and Paul Redenbach gained some four minutes on the pack over the first and hardest climb of the day, St Patricks River (km 40). It grew by two more minutes before the peloton reacted, eventually pulling them in at kilometre 125, the third and last KOM of the day. Tighello was in the leading group and survived a bike change in the latter half of the race to evenutally come through and finish 5th in the stage that was won by Pollack. Second was Russian Alexei Markov (Milo-Russia) and third, German Christian Lademann (Tasmania International). The track riders certainly are having a field day in this Tour of Tasmania. Tomorrow's 135 km stage from Swansea to Hobart should suit the sprinters and Tighello in particular, but expect a lot of attacks from the German and Russian teams along the way.
