Tighello claims lead after stage one

Australian road champion, Robert Tighello showed his class to an international field of riders today by taking the lead in stage one of the Tour of Tasmania, a 143 km leg from Devonport to Launceston. Tighello, riding for the Peugot-Berri team was actually beaten for the stage honours by Russian Olympic track member Edouard Gritsoun with compatriot Vladimir Karpets taking third, and a general mixture of Russians and Germans filling out the top eight. However, due to time bonuses he earned in the sprints en route, Tighello gained enough to put him four seconds in the lead ahead of Gritsoun.

The race was ripped apart after just 10 kilometres, when an attack went over the first an only KOM at Melrose. Eleven riders escaped, including most of the Russian track squad, and were never seen again by the bunch. They had over four minutes at the finish and it was the Australians who missed out. However, Tighello used his excellent sprint to pick up the bonus at Latrobe and Deloraine, and found himself in the lead by the finish with a fine second place to Gritsoun. The Russian had actually attacked with a few kilometres to go and managed to hold off Tighello on the line by a short distance.
