Preview:

The 36th Tour de l'Avenir which is only open to riders who are under-25 years of age begins in Plumelec with 132 riders representing 22 teams. The race will be over 10 stages starting in Plumelec and finishing on the south at Saint-Jean-de-Luz for a total of 1511 kms. The peloton contains 7 national teams - France, Austria, USA, Netherlands, Luxembourg, Norway and Switzerland, and 3 French teams - Bretagne, Vendée-Pays-de-la-Loire and Normandie. More than 15 nationalities are riding.

Christophe Rinero won decisively in 1998 but this year's race looks very open on paper. The first stage involves 10 climbs of the difficult Côte de Cadoudal, and will be very important. The climbers who will get their chance in the Pyrenees later in the race will be able to judge their form from the outset. The Festina climber Patrice Halgand, won A travers le Morbihan on the same route and will be one to watch on Stage 1. The two local riders David Berthou (Bretagne team) and Christophe Guillome (Cofidis) will also want to be putting on a big display for their public.

The other teams are Banesto (Spa), Crédit Agricole (Fra), La Française des jeux (Fra), Cofidis (Fra), Euskaltel-Euskadi (Spa), Big Mat-Auber 93 (Fra), Team Gerolsteiner (Ger), Post Swiss Team (Swi), Vlaanderen 2002 (Bel), Mercury Cycling Team (USA), Saint-Quentin-Oktos-MBK (Fra), Besson Chaussures-Nippon Hodo (Fra), and Rabobank (Ned).

Past Winners

The history is divided into four phases. Between 1961 and 1969, the race was known as the Tour de l'Avenir. Then it became the Grand Prix de l'Avenir (Paris-Vierzon-Thiers), then to mark the change in political systems in the East of Europe, the race became the Tour of the European Community (1986-90). It resumed as the Tour de l'Avenir in 1991.
