Stage 7 saw big changes on the GC when American Floyd Landis (Mercury Cycling Team) got himself in a strong group of finishers - McGee, Trampusch, Ludewig, Osa and stage winner Christopher Jenner. Yoann Le Boulanger lost his leader's jersey when he was dropped in the last part of the stage as the route started to climb. He is now 10th overall some 0.35 down on Landis and still has a chance to come back.

The race was conducted in memory of former professional Thierry Claveyrolat, who committed suicide recently. The 166.5 kms journey between Castelsarrasin and Bagnères-de-Bigorre was always going to impose a severe test for the riders and only 33 finished under a minute behind. 10 riders went away in the first few kms at the first sprint at Beaumont (km 24.5). The break was driven by French rider Mickaël Leveau. Their freedom lasted some 54 kms. But as they were caught, Norwegian Mads Kaggestad and French rider Français Christophe Guillome re-issued the challenge and were joined by Marcel Gono (Aus), Branco Filip, Steve Vermaut and Lecrosnier. By the feed zone at Masseube they had a lead of 3.50. The peloton driven by Boulanger's French team, Banesto, Mercury and Euskaltel started to chase in earnest and the gap was progressively reduced.

Over the last difficulty of the day, the Côte de Cieutat, a group with all the major riders and pushed by aggressive riding from Landis went clear. Some riders started to find the going hard and Boulanger, in particular, encountered difficulties. Soon he was losing time as the group then joined the 6 with 3 kms to go.

At the finish, NZ'er Jenner (Crédit Agricole) was too fast for Landis who seemed to have lifted his work rate considerably in this race.
