The Ronde van Vlaanderen was founded in 1913 by Karel van Wijnendaele and
is the most important Flemish classic race. The race is always
characterized by cobblestones and short but steep climbs.
Achiel Buysse, Fiorenzo Magni and Eric Leman each won the race 3 times.
Johan Museeuw (2 wins) can add himself to these famous Flandriens.
The 82nd Ronde van Vlaanderen is the second race of the 1998 World Cup.
This year the race will start in Brugge, rather than Sint Niklaas.
Belgian's 1997 World Champion Johan Museeuw will use the Ronde to underline his
rebuttal of critics who have said he is finished. Last weekend, after winning
both the E3 Prijs Harelbeke and the Brabantse Pijl in successive days, He was
strident in his rejection of the critical scrutiny that he has been receiving.
Having already won the Ronde in 1993 and 1995, he has stated that it is his
race (traversing "zijn Vlaanderen" - "his Flanders") and he is the strongest rider
in the field. He talked about the early season where he largely worked for Mapei
teammates Frank Vandenbroucke and Tom Steels. His preparation was timed to peak
for RVV and last week's form indicates that he has probably timed it correctly.
He was reported as saying after the Brabantse Pijl last Sunday:
"Not bad for someone who's used up. Those who spread the word around that I'm over
the hill can expect such an answer. The question whether I'm ready for Sunday
is superfluous, I suppose? And even if I hadn't won I wouldn't be worried, I know
my body inside out."
The other big favourite is Michele Bartoli who won here in 1996 and also was GC
winner in the recently completed Driedaagse van De Panne. He has announced that
he is in form.
As Museeuw reaches the twilight of his career he had said that he is targetting
races now rather than trying to win the World Cup overall (he won in 1995 and 1996).
He is reported as saying: "After 11 years as a professional, I want to choose the
races in which I want to go really deep. I can afford to put the bike aside but
still love the job, the taste of victory, the team, the atmosphere too much."
Of the other major contenders, Andrei Tchmil is Museeuw's biggest fear although
the recently naturalised Belgian said he was not really tense about the Ronde.
He is reported as saying: It's only those who are not among the favourites but
still dream of victory that are tossing and turning in bed at night."
Telekom-ADR's Erik Zabel, the ROM for March, who is currently heading the World
Cup standings after his super win in Milan-San Remo is aiming for a top 10 place.
He knows that winning over a course that does not favour the sprinters will be
difficult.
Form Guide
Michele Bartoli - He was second on Saturday at Harelbeke and
on Tuesday's first stage of the Three Days of La
Panne. Michele has overcome the breathing problems
that he had and is close to his best form.
Gabriele Colombo - He has focused exclusively on this
race. In the Driedaagse van De Panne, he was very strong
when Museeuw attacked on the Kemmelberg.
Emmanuel Magnien - The new face of the season. He was second at
San Remo and fourth on Tuesday at Zottegem. He will use
his skills as a cyclo cross rider (6th at the Worlds)
on the pavé.
Frederic Moncassin - The Frenchman has been training on the roads
around his house, in the outskirts of Toulouse, with Australians Henk Vogels
and Stuart O'Grady, who will be his loyal lieutenants for Flanders.
Johan Museeuw - After winning at Harelbeke and Brabantse Pijl
over two days last weekend he has to be the rider to beat.
He demonstrated his power when he attacked during the Driedaagse van
De Panne on the Kemmelberg.
Rolf Sorensen - Good on the pavé and when the race goes
up the Muurs. The Dane who won here in 1997 has been seen at the front of
peloton on every stage of the Driedaagse van De Panne.
Andrei Tchmil - Tchmil was very powerful on the pave during
the Driedaagse van De Panne. He also follows Museeuw over the
Muurs, like his shadow. That is his only strategy. But how effective
it has turned out to be.
Peter Van Petegem - He is the great Flemish hope after
Museeuw for the Classic. He's been going to 'school'
climbing the Grammont. Van Petegem has won at Het Volk
twice and dreams of winning this race.
Erik Zabel - The German was taking it easy during the
Driedaagse van De Panne. He won at San Remo and wants to
consolidate his position on the World Cup Standings.
Stefano Zanini - Zanini is another from the Mapei-Bricobì team
who can win on the Pave. He knows how to attack and has a turn of speed.
He will ride with Museeuw and take his chances should Museeuw stumble.
Scott Sunderland - Bill's choice! In great form, and was very
unlucky earlier this week coming into Zottegem. For the first time
in many seasons he is the team leader and he lives nearby. Knows the
course and I just want him to win.
Best Climber Prize
The best climber in the RVV wins about $US2500 (100.000 Bfr). The prize has
been going since 1996 when Mauro Bettin won. In 1997, Franco Ballerini
was number one.
The prize is a points score where riders earn 3-2-1 on the first 6 climbs
and then 6-3-1 points from climb 7 to climb 15. The winner is the rider
with the most points and he has to finish the race.
