Race 7 - August 21: Short track cross-country

• Katerina Hanusova (Luna Chix) was the aggressor from start to finish in the Snowshoe women’s short track.
• Early in the race, Hanusova, Sue Haywood (Trek/VW) and Dara Marks-Marino (Ford-Specialized) were away. Shonny Vanlandingham (Luna Chix) would catch on just a lap later.
• The four leaders stayed together until three laps to go.
• Hanusova attacked in her big ring on the climb through the start/finish line.
• The attack held and Hanusova won her third Short Track of the 2005 NORBA season.
• In the men’s race, a huge group stayed together through the first fifteen minutes of the twenty minutes plus three laps race.
• Todd Wells attacked the group and pulled the final five (JHK, Kabush, Seamus McGrath and Chris Sheppard) with him. PS Todd: Eric Estrada called and he wants his sunglasses back.
• Seamus McGrath (Haro) had the legs to attack in the final laps.
• Two minutes later... the gap McGrath created in his last-lap attack held and he won the short track ahead of Geoff Kabush.
• Men’s Short-Track Podium. Your intrepid MTB reporter was just about sick of getting sprayed with champagne by this point.

Race 6 - August 21: Downhill

• The fog that had been present all weekend hung over the 10am Sunday qualification runs.
• Jared Graves posted the second-fastest qualifications time in the Snowshoe downhill.
• The downhill winner, Australian Mick Hannah, must have known he had a good run in him today - he was impatient to get started.
• What is it with gravity riders? They refuse to ride their bikes back up to the top of the hills they ride down
• The Snowshoe downhill run, although steep and slick, had only a couple of major obstacles.
• Women’s downhill winner Kathy Pruitt (Luna Chix) changed tires and slipped into the skinsuit, expecting the drying course to be faster than the slick qualifications course.
• Once dry, the ground coughed up tons of sharp pebbles and rocks. This Yeti rider lost his front tire halfway into his finals run.
• John Kitkaldie earned a podium spot with his 04:18:96 run.
• Rich Houseman (Yeti) cuts the final corner.
• Jared Graves moved into first after his run. Only one man was left to ride.
• From Cairns, Australia, Mick Hannah (Haro) won only his third NORBA event.

• John Kirkaldie (Team Maxxis) made it through the early heats and into the consolation bracket.
• Melissa Buhl posted the fastest women’s qualifying time and was granted a bye in her first run.
• Yeti rider Rich Houseman faced off against teammate Jared Graves in the semi finals.
• Kathy Pruitt (Luna Chix) squared off against Tara Llanes (Giant – Pearl Izumi in the women’s consolation round.
• Melissa Buhl was strong in the finals but slid off the course in the final run to lose to Katrina Miller (Jamis Bicycles).
• Australian Jared Graves (Yeti) took top honors in the Dual Slalom at the Snowshoe NORBA.

• Anticipating rain and mud, many racers in the pro men’s cross country installed mudguards
• JHK won the hole shot. A crash on a rooty downhill five minutes later would sideline him with a mechanical
• Local favorite Sue Haywood (Trek/VW) is called to the start of the women’s cross-country race
• Former World Champion Alison Dunlap (Luna Chix) is just two races away from ending her pro mountain-bike career
• Shonny Vanlandigham (Luna Chix) has won five of seven NORBA cross country races this season so far
• Heather Irmiger (Tokyo Joe's) followed up her Brian Head, Utah NORBA cross-country win with a solid fifth place in Snowshoe
• Willow Koerber (Subaru-Gary Fisher) took the hole shot and stayed aggressive through the entire first lap, holding on at the end behind Shonny Vanlandingham for second on the day
• Although some racers had team mechanics on hand, WTB setup assistance in the tech zone.
• With Jeremiah Bishop twenty seconds up the road, an elite group of four chased (Kabush, Adam Craig, Barry Wicks and Todd Wells)
• Shonny Vanlandingham is almost unbeatable in NORBA cross-country racing in 2005
• Sue Haywood (Trek/VW) and Dara Marks-Marino (Ford/Speacialized) try to reconnect with the leaders at the end of the first lap
• Alison Dunlap (Luna Chix) pulled herself onto the podium one more time in NORBA competition.
• The feed and tech zone was packed with support personnel
• At the end of the second of three laps in the men’s race, Jeremiah Bishop still held onto a lead over Geoff Kabush
• Geoff Kabush has learned to be patient when in the position he found himself today. He says he rode within himself and kept Bishop in sight, waiting for an opportunity to take the win.
