A pleasant summer morning saw a record 140 riders turn out to race, with many first timers coming out for their first mountain bike racing experience. The numbers were boosted too by a number of interstate riders coming for a hit out before next weekend's (January 18-19) MTBA/CA National Round at Blue Range. The course was the usual Ingledene course: fast and flowing, with long sections of relatively open singletrack, and some sharp corners to test a rider's concentration. Most riders seemed to enjoy the race and stayed around afterwards to swap tales with their fellow competitors. In the Senior Men's race Brent Miller, local rider and member of the KHS team set to race the NORBA circuit in the United States, showed off his current good form to lead the race from start to finish. Miller finished with a comfortable close to three and a half minute lead on second placed James Williamson, with Richard Bontjer a further two minutes back in third place. In contrast the he Senior Women's race saw some very close racing, with a group of four riders riding the first three laps together. Niki Gudex had the speed over the closing stages of the final lap to finish nine seconds ahead of Janine Ridsdale, with Emily Viner a further five seconds back. In the Veteran Men's race ever green Paul Burbidge Smith set a lightning pace from the start to win the race, but was closely matched by Gary Scheld who finished less than half a minute behind with Rod Higgins in third place. In the Sport A Men's race Steve Peddle rode consistent laps to win the race, ahead of Jonathon Learmonth who was tiring in the latter stages of the race. Jason Hart finished third. Other category winners on the day included Adair Ferguson in Master's Women who seems to get fitter with each race, John Graydon in Master's Men, Sarah Wilson in Sport A Women and Kate Miller in Novice Women. Thanks to Phil Hopkins, Dean Kozlik, Tony Scott, Tony Frazer, Paul Cole and Liam Adamaitys for their efforts in setting the course, registration and timing. Good luck to all riders in the upcoming National round at Blue Range this coming weekend!
