Ready Hire 12 HR Mountain Bike Team Challenge

Australia, 2002

Report by Sharon Payne

Three hundred riders started Queensland's Ready Hire 12 hour mountain bike race on Saturday at Fellcraig near Beaudesert. Individuals and teams from New South Wales and Queensland competed on a new tough course which had a mixture of climbs, downhill, sandy and dusty sections. Racing began at 9.20 am on Saturday finishing in the dark 12 hours later.

After a Le Mans start included a 30 metre run before mounting bikes the first lap was taken by Matt Smith.

Ten individual riders competed alongside teams of 2, 4 and 6. First individual male was Saul Britton on 56 laps with an impressive lead from second place getter Howard Duhs on 47 laps. Third placed Anthony Cooke rode 40 laps in the 12hour period. Belinda McIntyre from Brisbane used her 24hour experience to give her the lead over newcomer Sue Donoghoe from Boonah.

The winning team from the Gold Coast was the Nerang Cycles team of Phil Hystek, Brett Stevens, Jack Weitenberg, Lee Barber and brothers Mark and Michael Skroblin. They rode a total of 76 laps well ahead of closest team with 4 riders, Ninety Percent Normal who covered 73 laps.

Michael Skroblin used the event as final speed preparation before setting off overseas to contest the Under 19 World Championships in Austria on 29 August. Michael currently leads the open division in Queensland's Super Series Races after 4 races.
