The course at Stromlo Paintball (named for its proximity to a paintball venue) was being used for only the second time in a race, and the lack of rain over the winter meant conditions were on the dusty side. The course was predominantly single track laced with momentum stopping corners and bumpy sections of track that demanded the rider's attention and finesse. The race got off to a fast start with riders sprinting to the first single track located only 300 metres from the start. However, riders soon found their place and rythmn in the single track. The relatively flat nature of the course made for some close racing in many of the categories. This wasn't the case in the Senior men's race though, with a fit and fast Shane Paton leading the race from start to finish, to finish almost two minutes ahead of his nearest rival Jason Watts, with Dave Osmond in third place. In the Senior Women's race Jacqui Clynes, the sole competitor, rode a good consistent race to claim 100 points towards the pointscore. The Sport A Men's race saw close finishes for the first three places with Matt Lees and Daniel Schlage separated by only two seconds, with Ira Cooke a further twenty seconds back in third place. Close racing was also the feature of the Sport B Men's race, where riders ride in small packs for much of the race. Wayne Spratford took first place, five seconds ahead of Peter Carter, and Dean Scott a further five seconds back in third place. Rod Higgins repeated his good form of the previous race to be a clear winner in the Veteran Men's race with John Paul and Simon Tilley fighting it out for second and third place. Other winners on the day included Paul Lees in Masters Men, Angus Harding in Under 15 Men, Belinda Allison in Sport A Women and Marea England in Sport B Women. Thanks to race directors Trish Garrett and Ben Geier for their efforts, and to Tim Minehan, Leslie Ridsdale, James Andrews and Matt Lemm for time keeping and other help on the day. The next CORC Winter Series XC race is scheduled for September 15th and Majura Pines.
