The rain eased off as the start drew near and the Senior Men and Sport A Men got off at 9:30 in a fine drizzle. Brent Miller led out Dylan Cooper in the Senior Men and looked about to repeat his winning form of the previous races until a slow rear puncture gave Dylan the opportunity to pass on the last lap and take the category by 45 seconds. Shane Paton came in third. It was a similar story for the Senior Women with Nicole Fisher leading out Jackqui Clynes only to see Jackqui overtake in the third lap to finish 52 seconds in front. The Sport A Men and Veteran Men also provided close finishes with Daniel Schlage getting home 19 seconds ahead of Ira Cooke and Mal Bennett holding off Paul Brodie by 13 seconds. On the positive side of the rain, the new tracks are now bedding in well, and with the incineration of many of the tracks around Dairy Farmers hill in Stromlo Forest over Christmas, they are getting a lot of recreational riding as well. There were few really wet sections and only a short section of single track after the start was made up of the really tyre-sucking mud. It was great to see several groups of spectators out on the race course, always ready to offer some constructive criticism of riding technique. We also had lots of first time CORC riders and a special thanks to Luis for both running the skills session on the course on Saturday and for having a bag full of CORC membership forms to trap the unwary recreational cyclists - and now CORC members. Thanks to Paul Cole for setting another great course, and to Tony Scott for doing the timing so Russ could get back on the bike. The final race of the series will be at Majura Pines on 12 May, 2002.
