The inaugural Flight Centre Peppers Hidden Vale Cycle Epic was conducted on Saturday 25 October. A field 376 riders rode the gruelling 107 kilometre course from Preston Peak Wines to Peppers Hidden Vale. This was the first time that an event of this type has been conducted in Australia.

The majority of entrants completed the Epic as solo riders in both the competitive and recreational categories. For 50 per cent of riders, this event was their first experience of racing. It is evident that the Hidden Vale Cycle Epic will become a cult event as it has captured the imagination of a great many riders.

Bushranger Bikes Pty Ltd and Healthwise (Flight Centre Limited) were tasked to promote and manage the mountain bike marathon. The management team deliberately targeted cyclists from all disciplines ignoring the temptation to appeal to the existing traditional tribalism within the sport. As a result, the Epic attracted a wide range of participants from all facets of cycling. It is clear that this event transcends mountain biking.

The event enjoyed strong regional support from local government and media including television, radio and press. These bodies have indicated ongoing support for the Epic due to its positive flow on effect to the districts it impacts.

The 2004 Hidden Vale Cycle Epic is scheduled for 19 September. The event's goals for 2004 include a participation target of 1,000 rider and gaining international standing. Sponsorship enquires: Bushranger Bikes Pty Ltd Ph: (07) 3311 2450.

The 2004 Hidden Vale Cycle Epic categories: 100 km Solo Open Classic, 100 km 2 person teams, 100 km 4 person teams, 50 km Solo Challenge.
