Race 3 - March 14: Cross Country

Australians dominate cross country events

The Australians dominated the cross country competition on the second day of the UCI Oceania Mountainbike Championships in Nelson. Both Australian National Cross Country Champions won their respective races with Adelaide's Chris Jongewaard and Melbourne's Dellys Starr reconfirming their current positions as two of only four Australian riders on the shadow team for the Beijing 2008 Olympics.

Jongewaard had to fight for the lead which was taken by former Athens Olympian, Sid Taberlay from Tasmania. Multi-Australian titleholder Taberlay, who finished sixth at the Commonwealth Games, led convincingly during the first four of six laps of the 8.4 km course - eventually opening up a 20 second lead on his rival. In the final two laps, Jongewaard not only made up the deficit and quickly reclaimed the lead with a 45 second advantage. He won in a record 2:00:19. Taberlay could not answer and placed second at 1:18 with Victorian Dan McConnell claiming third nearly four minutes down. All three riders are only Australia's shadow team for the Olympics. The top New Zealander was Invercargill's Marcus Roy in sixth place.

Australian Dellys Starr, the only female rider to qualify for the Australian shadow team, was in a class of her own in the elite women's race. The 31 year-old spread-eagled the field to win her four lap race in 1:37:43, with New Zealand's Kaytee Boyd impressing with her second place, ahead of Australian Rowena Fry.

"I pushed up the climbs and pulled away and lead from the start," said the women's winner. "I always go out as hard as I can. I was happy with the win because my preparation and training is heading in the right direction." Starr said she had done some threshold training before this event however with a long season of World Cups ahead, Starr says she will return to strength training.

Starr will race the remaining short course cross country in Nelson before returning to Melbourne for one day with her family before heading overseas to start her assault on the World Cups in Europe.

Australians made a clean sweep of the men's U23 competition, won by Lachlan Norris, a 21 year-old university student who had returned to form to finish five laps in 1:20:29.

"The win today will mean I get a good starting position at the World Cups and World Championships," explained Norris, who will depart Australia at the end of this month along with the three members of the men's shadow team, Jongewaard, McConnell and Taberlay.

New Zealand's Monique Avery took the U23 women's honours. In a remarkable sprint finish Avery came in ahead of Australian Therese Rhodes. It completed a great day for the Avery family , with her mother Maryann winning the Masters race.

New Zealand's Jordan Blake won the U19 men and the brilliant Samara Sheppard successfully defended her U19 women's title.

The downhill will be run on Sunday.
