KINESIS UK riders Mark Thwaites and Johnny McEvoy scored a one-two in the biggest ever End to End Challenge on Sunday in what was a bitter-sweet day for the local contingent. Surby's Paul Kneen came in third place, while four-times former winner Elliot Baxter was gutted when two punctures within the space of a few hundred yards wrecked his chances midway through the grueling 42-mile event. From a record number of 405 entries, approximately 380 left the Point of Ayre start at 10am precisely. In just about perfect conditions, it was no surprise when an initial lead bunch made up primarily of the local elite and visiting riders broke away from the chasers on the initial sprint to Bride village. Island and Commonwealth Games roadie Graeme Hatcher went off the front for a spell and succeeded in gaining the best part of a minute's lead over the other fancied runners on the next stretch to Jurby. As the lead bunch slowly fragmented with the hot pace, the following peleton grew to around 70 as the twists and undulations of the coast road were negotiated, and Ballaugh was reached in little over half an hour by the leaders. Averaging precisely 20mph, the bigger peleton arrived a couple of minutes later. The slower riders took anything up to one hour to complete the initial 14-mile road section. Once on the dreaded Ballacobb climb, the race soon took shape. Baxter, the former Junior British Mountain Bike cross-country champion, took the bull by the horns and succeeded in cycling up the steepest and rockiest part of the ascent to the first set of open sheep gates. He'd tried this on several occasions in training, but this was the first time he had managed to complete the full climb without dismounting. Enough to destroy the confidence of even the toughest of rivals, Baxter pulled 10 or 15 seconds clear of the chasing half-dozen, containing three of the Kinesis riders plus locals Ashley Whipp, Andrew Cook and Paul Kneen, with Hatcher just off the back in eighth. Experiencing the stiff head wind for the first time over the Slieau Curn ruts, leading onto the stonier Slieau Dhoo track, Baxter continued to build upon his early lead. But, realising the wind was a little tougher than expected, he decided to hold back and wait for Ilkley's Mark Thwaites over the long grind away from the Brandywell Road towards the Cronk Breck junction. The pair then worked together on the fast descents and sharp ascents over the long plantation road which eventually leads on to the gas pipe route at the back of Beary Mountain. Still feeling strong, and above all confident, Baxter was preparing himself for the fast descent to Ballacraine when he suffered a rear puncture on the rocky Dowse track. Using a spray can filler to provide a quick-fix cure for the flat, he failed to initially get enough pressure in the tyre and a second flat followed within the space of half a mile. From that point on the chase was effectively over for the former Raleigh and Giant works rider and his dream of a winning comeback in the event after a three year break was over. The former professional, now 28, dropped to 20th on the road and although he fought back to overtake Andy Cook for 10th spot at the third checkpoint (Cook having also suffered a puncture on the Dowse), he was left with simply too much work to do. Such was the pace of leader Thwaites that he arrived at the end of the Crag-ny-Crock plantation road at 12.16pm - a full 14 minutes earlier than expected. He was followed five minutes later by his Kinesis team-mate McEvoy, with a third member, Sammy Thompson, a further two minutes behind. Paul Kneen led the local charge in fourth at the 50k mark, one minute behind Thompson and a similar margin ahead of teenager Ashley Whipp, who really was having a storming ride. Tristan Gell, Kinesis team boss Chris Truett, Aaron Livesey and leading veteran over 50 Reg Haigh of the Marie Curie Club. Baxter and Cook came next, a full 15mins down on the leader. Having had a close nip-and-tuck contest with Sammy Thompson, Kneen passed the Southport rider on his home patch at the far end of the Carnanes, leading onto the back Surby road not far from where he lives. Once on the road section he buried his head on the approach to Rushen Parish Church to buckle the Englishman's resolve. He climbed the lung-bursting Howe hill to the finish at the old quarry car park on the approach to Cregneash with relative confidence, though the odd cautious glance over his right shoulder revealed that fellow local Tristan Gell was on a late charge and had also powered past Thompson. Third place, and the Masters class prize, was in the bag for 37-year-old Kneen, 11min 35sec behind winner Thwaites but just 2min 43sec off runner-up McEvoy, the 17-year-old first year junior who is one of the leading cyclo-cross riders in the country. Former podium man Gell was just 42.8s off a place in the top three on this occasion thanks to another typically solid ride, gaining him the Senior class honours, with Thompson making it three Kinesis riders in the top five. Baxter regained another five places in the final quarter of the race to finish a hard-earned but disappointing sixth, just edging out fellow local Aaron Livesey in the closing miles - the latter delighted with seventh in what was his first finish in the event - having gone out at the midway point in his only other attempt two years ago. His mount was a 15-year-old Orange formerly campaigned by Tony Varley. Behind Whipp in ninth spot, Glen Vine veteran Julian Corlett was the next local finisher in 12th (second veteran 40-49), followed by the impressive U23 Alex Kinvig in an excellent 13th, seeing off the likes of Graham Hughes, Chris Tierney and Gianni Epifani. A very impressive ride too from Oxford University student Richard Callow of Union Mills in 22nd place, close behind Kale Hawkins, Andrew Cook, Mark Harrison and David Glover, and ahead of other experienced riders such as Robert Dooley (who suffered no fewer than four punctures), Tony Varley, Mark Kelly, Juan Kinley and Graeme Hatcher. The contest for honours in the women's race was keenly fought in the early stages, but ultimately Jo McLintock of Hexham, Northumbria won by a comfortable margin. On the road section, former junior women's national time trial champion Cayley Ennett of Greeba was well placed towards the front of the main peleton, but McLintock moved ahead on the first steep ascent of Slieau Curn. With Ennett initially feeling quite ill, she dropped back further places as first fellow local Natalie Arrowsmith then Wokingham veteran Jacque Easton filed past. Arrowsmith, who was enjoying a cracking ride, lost third place on the road to Ennett when she stopped at the first checkpoint to take on some food and drink, but there was little between the two Manx girls over the undulations leading towards the Beary. Ennett, encouraged briefly by her father Geoff whose attempt to complete 10 E2Es in succession when his bike broke in two on the dreaded Dowse track, descended well to Ballacraine and soon pulled well clear of Arrowsmith as the latter tired slightly. Ennett reclaimed second place from Easton as she too suffered from fatigue in the Glen Rushen to Eary Cushlin area, but McLintock was well out on her own, finishing approximately 15min clear on the road. Warwick University law student Ennett was pleased with what was her first attempt at the event, claiming the women's u23 prize in 83rd place overall. Local PC Jenny Steele was the fifth woman home in 98th place, suffering badly from cramp in the last half mile or so on the cruel Howe ascent. Third from last home of the 341 finishers, former women's Parish Walk winner and centurion Roey Crellin marked her 50th birthday with the grand veteran women's prize on a special day she said she would never forget.
