An interesting race developed between the elite men over the 6 laps of the 5.5 Km course. In the beginning it was Dylan Cooper leading the field closely followed by Shaun Lewis, Brent Miller, Ben Henderson, James Williamson and Shane Paton. Cooper extended his lead as the race wore on, consistently putting time between himself and the class field. For the rest, the twisting Kowen tracks proved unpredictable with positions changing regularly in the first half of the race. Dry conditions made the course fast and flowing making the speed of the elite riders a spectacle to watch weaving between trees and powering along the rough terrain. As the race wore on the endurance of James Williamson, who rode the MONT Australian 24 Hour Championships completing over 370km and finishing second, proved an attribute even over short distances finishing fourth behind Kona Team rider Shane Paton. Shaun Lewis, renowned for his strength in the NSW State Series, worked hard to keep the gap between himself and Dylan Cooper to a minimum, finishing second. The course took its toll with nineteen year old rider Ben Henderson retiring midway from a high position. Australian Elite Womens XC Series Champion Niki Fisher made a welcome return to racing after injury and delivered a message to everyone that she is back. The riders will likely meet again in there weeks at round 5 of the CORC cross-county series at Sparrow Hill with some scores to settle.
